     If on Windows you need GenPatcher.
     
     I tried to get it to work on Linux but it depends on some libraries that are not avaliable, and devs tell you to fuck off.
     
     But since then, I learned how to decompile .net applications so I may take another crack at it to find out exactly what patches are being done, why, and what ones will or won't work for Linux/Proton.

     Yeah it's wild that they keep releasing ANCIENT builds, like on steam as well. The steam version doesn't even have the live-animated intro. The EA APP version though does and works the best out of the box, next to "The First Decade" DVD I had as a kid.

     I have been running Linux/Ubuntu almost every day since 2014. It really does just work most the time. For those things that you can't do (you can) - there's always a VM or a dual boot.

     Yeah Ubuntu is (generally) pretty safe. Stick to an LTS release and you will (usually) have a comparable (usually better) stability experience. Just upgrade releases every 2 years.
     
     Same stuff with any computer though: make regular backups.
