#QT https://dair-community.social/@KimCrayton1/112854231460652234 UPDATE from my instances moderators

“None of these people are coming from known racist instances, it’s just wack-a-mole”

I chose this space because its owners are used to being targets

Due to my work, they invited me to join so I trust them

I share these stories because too many of you live with the delusion that “if I don’t see it, it’s not happening” which means that the victims of this shit are left to fend for themselves

Good ol’ Mastodon I’ve NEVER been called NIGGER more than I have TODAY Even with all the “protections” removed on TWITTER I don’t get this kind of response Trust I’m OK because I know whiteness better than you know yourself, so I got this, BUT I’m pointing this out because the use of different tech does NOT change white supremacist behavior Mastodon continues to demonstrate that it’s NOT ready for an inclusive society

Hello! I can answer that question: it's the antiblackness. That's why there's so few Black folks here. Whiteness provides a lot of comfort and protection for most users on the fediverse (no matter how sensitive they are) and nothing but punishment and isolation for ones who aren't white, ESPECIALLY if they are Black.

Unfortunately for you, your post also falls under the antiblack category. What you're doing is something I was making fun of in this post:

      https://blackqueer.life/@tillshadeisgone/112173544371296122

To wit, the fedi lacks the extra protections (such as a base level universally applicable deny list that is easy and readily available for new server admins to use that includes the Nazi instances etc) that would make it safer for Black users like Kim, so they wouldn't have to resort to all of these patchwork individual measures such as filtering, muting, blocking, etc just to be able to experience the fediverse without experiencing racism, something that ALL white users are able to do without doing any extra work.

Robust moderation and actual safety tools that Black folks have been asking for since years before I ever joined the fedi should be built into the digital infrastructure and users deserve robust moderation on top of that. The fact that most instances lack these things is precisely why white users of many different marginalizations flourish here but most Black folks barely come or usually show up and quickly leave.

All the while, white users are free to remain clueless about the whole thing while enjoying the fedi in ignorance while Black folks are left trying to explain all of that to people who, as often as not, don't actually want to learn about it for convenience's sake.

So, hopefully that clears some things up.

... given tools to do so.

I'd be happy to share how I use filters if anyone is interested.

I know it's more techy here than the other places and that's heavily white and male but there are also large communities of very sensitive peoples, who are not white male geeks that thrive here and I'm not sure why they do but others, like black women, don't.

... Please don't take this analogy wrong. Sometimes I suck at them until later when clever comes to me.

It feels like the roles are misunderstood here. The instance admin upkeeps and protects the instance server, your structural "home" from earthquake & arson, etc.

The mods protect all the residents of the home from an intruder who is a danger to the residents.

They can't follow everyone around and protect each one from passers by. We do that part ourselves and we're... 3/

..."fend for yourself" if looked at a different way is taking power into your own hands.

Personally, there are words that trigger me. People use them all the time. If I were to try to block them all, I would drive myself crazy and my experience here would... yeah I'd leave.

The best tool Masto has is the filter. You don't have to block people, assholes, playing whack-a-mole, you filter out their toots... 2/

      *deep breath*

I'm pretty sure no matter what I say or how I say it, people will come at me, even though I am not trying to stir anything up nor make excuses for anybody. *dives head first*

This reminds me of botnets. Your server/website gets attacked, HARD, from a bazillion different IPs and there is no way to "whack-a-mole" to get rid of them all. You just can't.

Here, you're instance mods can't, & your instance admin can't. They'll just keep coming... 1/

Yeah we had to limit hachyderm due to a large number of users exhibiting typical white techbro biases over and over with little to no action taken by the mod team

@Seb_Solon @KimCrayton1 lol I blocked a whole bunch of people from that instance and even considered blocking the whole instance so I’m wondering who it’s “well moderated” for? Not Black women.

Apparently hachyderm.io is well moderated on that regard (if you are willing to change instance). See : https://hachyderm.io/@mekkaokereke/112854626169710225

@sibrosan@mastodon.social @kims@mas.to @weaselcheese@mozilla.social Mastodon.cloud was by far the worst moderated social media experience I've ever had. And I am a vocal, highly visible Black dude on Twitter, Instagram, ICQ, etc. Fediverse was the worst and it wasn't close. Hachyderm.io is by far the best moderated social media experience I've ever had. And I'm still me. That variance is the problem. And Hachyderm staff, from technical, to admin, to mods, to community management + comms, are unrealistically over-qualified.♥️👍🏿

@juliewebgirl you expressed an ignorance. I corrected it. And as I predicted, you didn't want to hear it and instead decided to just ignore what I said.

"All the while, white users are free to remain clueless about the whole thing while enjoying the fedi in ignorance while Black folks are left trying to explain all of that to people who, as often as not, don't actually want to learn about it for convenience's sake."

You literally did exactly what I said. You're a fucking racist and part of the problem. Fuck off

Man am I thankful that my instance has a 500 character limit. That was a little long answering a question that I didn't ask. Nor did I see the OP ask. So context is lost. You lost me anyway when you said you make fun of people. Ciao!

@benny oh they definitely exist, but you have to go looking for them/someone has to tell you about their existence. At no point in the user or server admin onboarding process are they made available to you directly.
