@catmanmancat >It's just a shame you need to jump through hoops like crazy to minimize your location data being sold. Your location data is being sold no matter what you do.
Osmand~ is functionally superior to google maps as it isn't proprietary malware and it works offline.
This means you can go on a (based illegal) boat trip vacation to a another country, or even hiking in the forest in areas that are thankfully still free of mobile coverage and know exactly where you are the whole time without notifying any glowies of your exact location in realtime.
google almost always refuses to update incorrect map information or even allows it to be reported and ignores all update requests via other methods, meaning that it *will* direct you over a bridge that has collapsed.
Meanwhile, openstreetmap volunteers are constantly updating street information (the street layout is pretty much complete and the only thing that's missing is complete building numbers and all businesses marked as PoI's - but that's not really that important, as if you want to get to some house on brokeass street - as you just enter in the street and once you get to the street, look for the number), so you just enter the street and the most optimum route gets calculated for you (it obviously doesn't account for traffic conditions, but street layout is always screwed, so the shortest calculated route is almost always still the fastest route).
@not_benis@birdulon@NitroDubs@troubledturtle In all honesty, Google Maps is the single best product Google has ever put out. It's just a shame you need to jump through hoops like crazy to minimize your location data being sold. I have a high-end android and me woife the latest iPhone and we always compare live data with Google maps vs Apple maps vs Waze. Google always has the most accurate routes and the fastest routes and the best traffic and construction data however Waze is better for police information but is awful on routes legitimately ways will suggest routes that are six miles further and an extra 20 minutes worth of stoplights than Google maps so usually when we're on road trips I have her pull up Waze for cops and I use Google maps for directions so I can drive at appropriate speeds. Apple maps was originally just a Google maps clone but they got busted using Google's data and had to use their own and it's inaccurate as fuck It's basically 10 years behind Google because they don't have the cars driving around scanning the streets in 360° for a decade straight. When it comes to traffic navigation absolutely nothing is better than satellite view on Google maps because it literally shows you all of the buildings in real time.
@not_benis@NitroDubs@catmanmancat@troubledturtle I've been stuck with a similar arrangement for a while and don't like google maps' turn-by-turn as it's a bit late in telling you what lane you need to be in for upcoming turns. Screens aren't great either but a quick glance can often disambiguate what's coming up. The real solution would be if the turn-by-turn gave more lane instructions, e.g. "in 500m take the left two lanes to turn left, and then get in the right two lanes". There's other improvements they could make but that would require more accurate lane maps tracking, mainly "please don't wait until after the turning lane has split off and cars behind me are going into it to tell me I need to get into that lane".
@NitroDubs@catmanmancat Best thing about the 2024's is they fixed a of the few issues I had with the older models. First being the much improved infotainment system , prior years had smaller screens. Second improvement is exhaust , previous years had a very JDM esque sounding exhaust note. The new models sound much better .
>however you have to opt out of you being actively monitored and then advertise to based on the places you're going. Why would that option do anything except notify them to spy on you harder and hide the specific ads that are obviously based on where you are going?
>but never once has it led me down a closed road I do not use google maps, but in the past I've been on the receiving end of incorrect information that google never corrects.
I've noticed that proprietary navigation software of many different kinds are bad at showing you when to turn, but osmand is quite good at doing so as it tells you what road sign to look for.
>I can always use it offline because you're able to download offline maps with Google But does it allow you to download everything for the whole state, country or the whole Earth?
>try to use only that for my shitpoasting efforts >Ineffectively shitposting with a demon rectangle instead of a fully unfettered desktop.
@Suiseiseki As a side note it appears we offer Osmand in the states and I'm going to give it a try. I have a last gen flagship android phone that I'm going to de-google and try to use only that for my shitpoasting efforts and just get a prepaid sim & use that for all my activities I can.
>I also don't go anywhere I need to hide. I'm a boring dude with a family who has fun on the Internet. Yes you do, even if you never go outside.
Many people are starting to get implicated in crimes that they have nothing to do with and had no chance of knowing anything about because their tracking device reported that they were in the area at the time of a crime.
>it'd be cool to try and survive with a completely de-googled phone but it's already very integrated into my family life & my children etc. You confuse "integration" with parasitic attachment.
@Suiseiseki Yeah the Osmand app is asking for money. Maybe it's different in your country, But there's a purchases tab for the different add-ons (apparently it's other layers for the maps) & I only get 7 free offline downloads and it isn't super populated when it comes to remote US. Territories. Hopefully it takes off because I'm into it.
I'm only referring to my anecdotal experience that GM has never let me down. Your experience on a different continent will obviously be different.
Yes I know I'm being actively monitored everywhere regardless except a few states do make it illegal to do so without consent. (I think they still do it though.) I also don't go anywhere I need to hide. I'm a boring dude with a family who has fun on the Internet.
Downloading my local areas / states I frequent is a cool idea if I'm ever without service. I hope it gets better though.
Yeah, I think it'd be cool to try and survive with a completely de-googled phone but it's already very integrated into my family life & my children etc.
I'm not buying another computer to shitpoast when a flagship android is great. I have a few hours per week to do so anyway. I'm usually busy with me woife and kids.
Thanks for the app recommendation though. I hope I can get into it deeper another day. 🤝
