So #Threads is slowly killing off #Twitter, & #TikTok Shop is spamming users to the point they are reopening #Instagram‽ I can not wait to introduce people to #Pixelfed! 🕺🏾

👉🏾 Instagram Threads triples downloads in December, reaching the top 10; X falls to No. 36 https://techcrunch.com/2024/01/30/instagram-threads-triples-downloads-in-december-reaching-the-top-10-x-falls-to-no-36/

@DopeGhoti@infosec.exchange @darnell@one.darnell.one @badtux@mastodon.social Yup! And all of the #Fediverse uses #ActivityPub so anyone -- hobbyist or engineer -- can write their own client and app, even their own client-app API. It's a lot of freedom.

I think the Fediverse is basically inevitable. I've been around a while and there's some network effect happening.

      Network effect is ... resilient.

That's the great thing about the #Fediverse - one application or another may not work well for you but another just might, and all those applications that work well for different people can all work together to let people who thrive in different applications thrive separately, together.

@badtux@mastodon.social @darnell@one.darnell.one I stopped using #Mastodon about 6 months after I started using it, and switched to Misskey-based shortform blogging like #Calckey, and now #Sharkey or #Catodon.

It really is a better user experience.

My instance sharkey.world is cutting edge.

@darnell I have checked into Threads twice. Once I logged in, looked around, and logged out. The second time I logged in, accepted a friend request from a long-time friend, and logged out. Mastodon seems to work better for me, except for the problem that you can't do a news feed on Mastodon about a specific breaking news item because it has no global search function.

Yeah, I am thinking along the same lines. The fediverse as composed from various activitypub implementations is basically an upgrade of the entire web to make it more interactive.

The other day I spotted somebody working on a #joomla extension. Its literally a leave-nobody-behind kind of transformation.

Mastodon is a pioneer, the way the first websites were pioneering. But in few years there will be thousands of specialized alternatives.

Yes, we need more of everything: libraries in all languages, documentation, best practice blogs, "learn the fediverse in 24hr" type books, evangelists, UI experts, artists, communication psychologists, complexity science specialists, users that dont just complain but raise specific issues in repos etc :-)

Above all imagination, a positive 'can do' and cooperative ethos and an understanding that its all still being built on zero or tiny budgets.

@phiofx @notroot @darnell @badtux @DopeGhoti my concern with the Fediverse is that in general we need more libraries to deal with its complexity. I'm seeing a lot of wheels being reinvented and testing is way, way harder than it should be.

@danjac @notroot @darnell @badtux @DopeGhoti i dont know the detailed history of the spec but from bits and pieces its seems to be reflecting the cumulative knowledge of a few people who pioneered a much earlier generation of projects (with a small more recent patch to accommodate some mastodon issues). There is now the FEP process for enhancements that will hopefully reflect current experiences and insights and some people do good work on deconstructing the protocol and creating testing suites

@phiofx @notroot @darnell @badtux @DopeGhoti right - the problem is that people are diving into "ActivityPub for X" but perhaps they are working in isolation and the work doesn't feed back into common libraries/tools for that language.

Personally I tried building a simple AP implementation a year or so ago and gave up because of the overwhelming complexity (and I've dealt with complexity before e.g. SAML integration) and the lack of good testing tools.

@phiofx @notroot @darnell @badtux @DopeGhoti ofc the reason for lack of libraries could be due to a poorly defined spec. Patching that up with more documentation etc is not really the solution.
