Something about Israeli tracking you?
All I've seen is that it does animated images better than apng and gif lol -

narcolepsy and alcoholism :flag: (hj@shigusegubu.club)'s status on Friday, 26-Jan-2024 07:12:06 JST narcolepsy and alcoholism :flag: @000a @a1ba it's only slightly better than jpeg/(a/m)png/gif and sometimes performs worse in terms of perceived quality, but it nonetheless was forced by Google onto everyone because it made google dot com load 22ms faster, and for a while ONLY chromium-based browsers supported is. To make matters worse, google uses same reasoning people pushed against webp to push against other formats like FLIF "It's not that better than webp". -

I would still use GIFs though as it's much easier to assume that gif is animated, unlike both webp and png where there's literally no way to programmatically tell if image is animated or not without literally looking into its bytes which is often not an option in CORS world. -

Sexy Moon (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Friday, 26-Jan-2024 07:20:13 JST Sexy Moon @hj @000a @a1ba I have to deal with images in my code at work and the main problem with webp is that the tooling is poor. you can't assume a gif is animated or transparent, you just have to load it. its easier to determine if a gif is transparent , tons of png have an alpha layer and then don't use it. the way I deal with that is I check all four corners of the image to see if any are actually-transparent -

Yes, gif can be not animated but that's an outlier. Transparency does not matter for my case. I just find it extremely annoying that there's is NO WAY to get ANY information about an image even if it came from "trusted" source, browser obviously knows that it need to animate an image or not but there's no API exposed for it. -

I recently went down this image format rabbit hole for my site, and found a general preference towards AVIF for the kinds of content I am serving.

I've had a good experience with it for photo-like pictures. Though, I imagine it basically just depends on the kind of image you're serving. If I'm going to use something I would usually reach for JPEG for, I'm tending to lean AVIF in the future.
