@Snoweider that's the Guardian for you. If only there were some nearby country where access rights have been enshrined in law for over 20 years to be used as an example of how things might develop if similar legislation were to be enacted in England. The Guardian has a pathological aversion to any story that highlights Scotlands' status as a country, separate from England. https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/news/outdoors-community-marks-20-years-of-scottish-access-rights/
The message here is that the great unwashed are the source of any harm that comes to our countryside, and that farmers are blameless custodians of the land. 🤔
@CloudyMrs ha yes! Although the #dailyfail somehow made a story about denied access in England about how unfair it is that Scots have their own access laws.
@Peternimmo@Snoweider the Guardian seems to have a policy of never ever mentioning any difference between Scotland and England unless they can spinniy to to claim that Scotland is failing in some way due to said difference. They're every bit as Unionist and anti Scottish as the Daily Mail. They just come at it from a different direction.
@MadeyeTheCarnaptious@Snoweider Also child poverty and homelessness rates. Would have been compared in depth if they were worse in Scotland but not even referenced since England compares unfavourably. This was very noticeable during Covid. Scotland was only mentioned whenever rates were worse here, alongside demands for Nicola to follow Boris's lead. Never ever the other way around.
@MadeyeTheCarnaptious@Snoweider I read the comments. Lots of reference to the SNP and discrimination. They read the headline and decided the story was about English people being banned by the SNP, from places where Scots could go. Thick as mince. But scary.
@ToniScott@Snoweider should moving away from the countryside mean they can never have access to the countryside again? Seems a bit permanent to me. Why not look for a middle ground? It's clearly possible. Just look North.
@Snoweider That’s a harsh conclusion to reach! People have literally moved away from the countryside, and many have no clue about how things work. Right to roam comes with a responsibility to care for farmed animals and respect those who make their living on the land, many of whom struggle to make a living.
@CloudyMrs@Snoweider I wasn’t talking about denying access, but about understanding. People with little or no experience of country life do not always grasp why it is important to close gates; dog owners believe they have a god-given right to let their dog off the leash in the country - trust me on that, I’ve tried to reason with them often.
@CloudyMrs Neither did I until I read this article! But it makes so much sense (medically, in terms of helping the patients, and from the perspective of long-term costs to the NHS), given what will happen to people if they can't access the right kind of food. @MadeyeTheCarnaptious@Snoweider
