        3rd Bass
3rd Bass was an American hip hop group that was active in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Formed by MC Serch, Pete Nice, and DJ Richie Rich, the group was notable for being one of the first successful interracial hip hop acts. Along with Beastie Boys and producer Rick Rubin, MC Serch and Pete Nice were two of the very few white hip hop artists who were widely respected in the community. The group dissolved in 1992 and again in 2000 and 2013 after short-lived reunions. The group released two studio albums in their initial career and both of them were certified gold by the RIAA. Career MC Serch (Michael Berrin), Prime Minister Pete Nice (Peter J. Nash), and DJ Richie Rich (Richard Lawson) were the three founding members of the group. Richie Rich was a local D.J., while Nice was an English major at Columbia University and hosted a hip hop show on Columbia's student radio station, WKCR-FM. Serch performed at clubs and block parties, and released a single called "Hey Boy" (b/w "Beware of the Death") on independent label Idlers. The two first performed as '3 the Hard Way', a name referred to in the...

@mjgardner I've never heard of this group before, thanks for making me look one step deeper than just the name, they and their front man seem to have been quite influential.

As a kid in Sweden in 1989 all we knew about hip hop unless we had a special interest was MC Hammer.

@mjgardner @gwadej This is fun! Good stuff.

I've absorbed a lot of US cultural knowledge through osmosis, but haha, the diss part has so much 1980s music scene inside baseball I'd have to look up every name mentioned on Wikipedia to catch up.

I'll look up the Hammer vs Serch beef at least, saw there was some video about it.

The first part, wow. If they'd release this today, internet comment people would say "hip hop was better before it was ruined by woke".

Oh wow, Serch talking about the hit Hammer put out on them after he misunderstood a diss they did in one of their songs.

Now Hammer says he didn't do it, who knows what's real, but Serch's version of the story is good for a movie script, crazy stuff, wow.

@clacke @gwadej As a nerdy white boy in the Philadelphia suburbs, I connected more with #3rdBass than, say, #BeastieBoys’ “Licensed to Ill." The latter’s following sample-heavy “Paul's Boutique” was more my style, though. I'm also a fan of Bomb Squad era #PublicEnemy from the same period.

Fun fact: “The Gas Face” helped launch the career of masked British-American rapper #MFDoom (then known as “Zev Love X”):
