You can create threads on Mastodon using the traditional method:

    1. Post first part of thread
    2. Reply to first part with second part
    3. Reply to second part with third etc

Some third-party apps and services also have thread creation tools.

It's a good idea to number threads so that people who notice one part will explore the rest.

Also, set first post to "public" visibility but replies to "unlisted", to avoid filling public timelines.

Lots more info on threads at https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-post-a-thread-on-mastodon/

      @1dalm

It depends what software your admin is running.

There's no official setting in Mastodon to adjust the character limit so it has to be done unofficially (by fiddling with the software's files outside the graphic interface), or the server has to switch to a fork like Glitch.

You can also just ask your admin to increase the character count if you have a lot to say.

@feditips I’ve found it best to post all subsequent posts as replies to the first post. That way, all posts are displayed by clicking on the first post vs each post appearing singly with a reply, which requires a separate click for each subsequent reply.
      (Hope that makes sense)
I’m using the generic Mastodon app.

Yes, as far as I know all the apps take you to the thread if you click on a post from within the thread.

I normally do similar thing with notepad to do a long thread in advance. There are also apps and services that will do this for you.

So, if you set the subsequent posts to unlisted, and someone from the public clicks on the first post, they will see the whole thread?

Also, I type it up in Mastodon until I near the limit, then copy to Notepad, then ditto for 2nd post, etc., then when I'm at the end I can add the right numbering (e.g. 1/9), and copy them from Notepad back to Mastodon and post them. This also helps with getting the right char count for each, cos of things like URLs only counting for 23 chars, etc.

p.s. Just to clarify, the "unlisted" visibility setting for posts is almost exactly like the public setting, anyone can see it.

The only difference is unlisted posts don't show up on the Federated or Local timelines, and don't show up in hashtag searches.

It will show up on your Home timeline if you're following me, but it won't show up on your Federated timeline (obviously not hugely relevant on mastodon.social though as Federated is unusable there though... 😀 ) or Local if you were on same server as me.

You can make your posts only visible to your followers by doing the following two things:

      1. Lock your account so that you have to approve who follows you (more info: https://fedi.tips/restricting-who-can-follow-you-in-mastodon/)

      2. Set your default posting visibility to followers-only (more info: https://fedi.tips/who-can-see-my-posts-in-mastodon-how-do-i-send-dms-in-mastodon/)

If you do both these things, only your followers will see your posts and only people you approve will be able to follow you.

Yeah, the name for "unlisted" is sort of misleading.

It is still a public post, anyone can see unlisted posts, even people who don't have an account on here.

The only post visibilities which restrict who can see them are "followers only" and "mentions only".

@potungthul @feditips I think the point is that “unlisted” doesn’t mean private. It means the post won’t show up in some places on its own. It’s in the context of doing a thread by replying to yourself multiple times without having each individual post show up in public timelines. Instead only make the first post public, so that the start of the thread can be discovered by anyone.
The p.s. is because people got confused by the distinction.

I'm not clear on the intent behind that post...
"Unlisted is just like Public, except it does not show up on federated or local timelines or hash tag searches or text searches."
But doesn't that make all the difference? Unless you happen to have lots of lots of followers, the Unlisted status would generally keep people from seeing your post, wouldn't it?

It would be like saying, Not hitting the Post button is same as hitting the Post button, except that people won't see your posts.

By the way, when I mention "federated" and "local" timelines, I don't mean your home timeline. There's a guide to the timelines here: https://fedi.tips/what-are-the-local-federated-home-timelines-how-do-i-stop-them-scrolling-too-quickly/
