Remember back in the olden days when you had to nip to the high-speed of the nearest town to pick up things you needed, and could take them home the same day? Thank goodness we now have the convenience of browsing six separate websites, creating a new account, paying by card, proving we aren't robots, confirming we want to make our purchase before it times out, paying £10 for postage, then hoping Evri doesn't deliver it to our wheely bins. #progress #myarse

Delphi (delphi@mastodon.scot)'s status on Sunday, 03-Dec-2023 04:37:35 JST Delphi @CloudyMrs You get parcels delivered to YOUR OWN wheelie bin?! How much extra do you have to pay for this elite service? We generally have to work out the location of the random house from the photo.

Mrs Cloudy (cloudymrs@mastodon.scot)'s status on Sunday, 03-Dec-2023 05:29:16 JST Mrs Cloudy @Delphi oh no you misunderstand. I just meant to a wheely bin, not necessarily my own. The number of "does anyone recognise this shed?" Posts I'm now seeing is ridiculous.

Thor (kodachrome@pnw.zone)'s status on Sunday, 03-Dec-2023 05:30:38 JST Thor @CloudyMrs For sure. BUT, doing all this shopping online means you don't have to interact F2F w/real live people, and that's Job number 1. Can you imagine the *horror* of looking directly in some retail employee's eyes, maybe even smiling, while you try your hardest to remember how to do "small talk". The stress! It's my theory that the web, especially combined with cell phones, has bred an entire generation of autistics.

Mrs Cloudy (cloudymrs@mastodon.scot)'s status on Sunday, 03-Dec-2023 05:32:50 JST Mrs Cloudy @kodachrome probably because she has to ask, she knows it's stupid, and she'd heard your line 39600 times already this week. Not the fault of the victims of a dystopian work environment.

Thor (kodachrome@pnw.zone)'s status on Sunday, 03-Dec-2023 05:32:51 JST Thor @CloudyMrs Also, I seem to have noticed that when one DOES have a superficial human interaction w/a stranger, they don't seem to even fathom irony or sarcasm anymore. I was in a Wally's yesterday buying cold drugs and when checking out the employee had to ask me if I was over 18. Full head of white hair on me. I laughed and asked "is this a trick question?". She seemed actually annoyed that I interacted w/her. Possibly b/c I'm an Undesirable, but I suspect there's more to it.

Personally, I think it would be better if college was promoting upcycling of the copious supply of second hand clothing rather than just teaching design and manufacture of new stuff. But that's obviously just my own opinion. -

Jaq W (jaq__w@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 03-Dec-2023 08:56:28 JST Jaq W @CloudyMrs The most fun bit for me, is having to log in to the website of my payment service who don't believe it's me because I always clear cookies, so then I have to receive a text message to my phone with a code that I then have to enter onto the website on my laptop, in order for my payment to be processed. And to get my email confirmation, because I always clear cookies, I have to request an email to my alternative email address to get a code to enter into my main email address. Fun!

Thor (kodachrome@pnw.zone)'s status on Sunday, 03-Dec-2023 09:01:29 JST Thor @CloudyMrs Yeah, that crossed my mind, but back in the "olden days" as you call them, people would seize upon such innocuous little comments as a vehicle for a bit of light-hearted banter. You know, socializing. With humans, not with a 6" screen. Nowadays, such socializing is to be avoided at all costs (not just at WM), in almost all spheres it seems, and if you mistakenly attempt it, it's met w/contempt.

Mrs Cloudy (cloudymrs@mastodon.scot)'s status on Sunday, 03-Dec-2023 09:01:29 JST Mrs Cloudy @kodachrome I isn't, though. I have teenagers, and i know their friends. They are brilliant. They're fun, enthusiastic, and engaged with the things that interest them in the real world as well as with screens. They are my hope that things will improve. The screen thing and the online thing was us, not them.

Delphi (delphi@mastodon.scot)'s status on Sunday, 03-Dec-2023 18:48:14 JST Delphi @CloudyMrs :face_hug: Oh goodness...I was so full of hope that a parcel was able to reach that close by the intended recipient. I've stopped using companies that only use evri, as they are the worst. This week we took in a parcel as next-door but one was out. Delivery guy said he'd put a note through but he hadn't, so they didn't call for it. They were surprised when I delivered it. Our last evri photo showed a porch (which we don't have). Had to go for a walk to locate the porch.

I grew up in Leicester and free on-road parking was limited to 1hr and was always rammed, as well as being half a mile from the centre where you might actually want to do any shopping.
