@Suiseiseki first of all, you don't need javascript to see the aforementioned error page. Second of all, by "not by choice" I really mean that I didn't choose to ""be on discord"", for all intents and purposes i'm not ""on discord"", you won't find me there, and if you find someone who seems or claims to be me - it's an impostor. I do "use" discord, but it's more like "forced to use" because certain people just refuse to anything else. Third of all, if you want to kill discord and other proprietary centralized network shit, it's way better to do it from within, you don't preach in a church, you preach on streets, even if you hate streets.
@hj >you don't need javascript to see the aforementioned error page You're right, now that I think about it, but proprietary JavaScript is going to be run if it's enabled nevertheless.
>for all intents and purposes i'm not ""on discord"", you won't find me there, and if you find someone who seems or claims to be me - it's an impostor. >I do "use" discord, but it's more like "forced to use" because certain people just refuse to anything else. Why are you contradicting yourself?
>if you want to kill discord and other proprietary centralized network shit, it's way better to do it from within, you don't preach in a church, you preach on streets, even if you hate streets. It is not possible to kill a proprietary network service/software combination by using it, as you're only making it more cemented, as you increase the network effect.
A more accurate simile would be that the only way to eliminate a certain kind of proprietary street would be to preach against it in a church, rather than walking along the proprietary street and thus not practicing as you preach.
ok, let's put it this way, being on "a phone network" and "using a phone network" are two different things - you're on the network if you have stable phone subscription and a phone number, but you can still use phone network without being on it by using a payphone or buying a prepaid single-use sim. Discord is all the same - you can make yourself a profile, use it as your primary mean of communication, share it with friends etc. OR you can make an account "niggerfaggot12345" just to connect to a server to say something to someone.
>It is not possible to kill a proprietary network service/software combination by using it, as you're only making it more cemented, as you increase the network effect.
Yes you can, and you can make it worse, if you shit in a room everyone else wants to leave it, but you need to enter the room first to shit in it.
>A more accurate simile would be that the only way to eliminate a certain kind of proprietary street would be to preach against it in a church, rather than walking along the proprietary street and thus not practicing as you preach.
If you preach against it in a church you're just repeating yourself to the people who are already agree with you, a literal echo chamber, you need bigger reach.
@hj OK, then what is your username there? (in my DMs if you don’t want to post it in public)? & if you don’t like Discord, then what is your preferred alternative?
For context: I do still use Discord & it’s what I use the most because the vast majority of my friends either refuse to adopt Matrix or Telegram or instead adopted anything else that I don’t use & don’t plan to use (Guilded, Revolt, XMPP, IRC, etc.)
@SilSinn9801@Suiseiseki i have xmpp, matrix, steam and of course, fediverse (pleroma chats preferably) and email. Once again, discord is out of necessity, and I refuse to share it because i'm not "on it" as I said down the thread, i don't want to strengthen its network effect even further.
fedi, steam, xmpp, email - in that order of preference.
@hj > Pleroma chats Aren’t they essentially private posts (or what Mastodon calls Direct Messages)? > Matrix Is your homeserver one of those that federates with Matrix.org (my homeserver) or one that blocklists MOrg? @Suiseiseki
