  Looks like it's very naive and their search barely works. Everything on the site that *does* work is off the shelf. I'd give it 5:1 that this is a project of people laundering grant money by delivering some barely passable work and paying salaries to friends, but it looks like they're just doing an Open Collective scam: https://opencollective.com/smat/expenses . Scroll down far enough on their front page and you see a row of logos that are not actually links, just images with event handlers attached. (It is not odd for scummy sites to clickwrap links, but it is a little odd to completely forego the links and rely entirely on JavaScript.) The last of those non-links goes to https://ddosecrets.com/wiki/Distributed_Denial_of_Secrets , the organization that came out of nowhere to displace WikiLeaks, with a key difference: whereas Wikileaks never posted anything that embarrassed the Kremlin, DDoSecrets never posts anything that embarrasses the CIA. (I'm certain that this is purely coincidental. :terrylol:)
  
  At any rate, to make a long story short, if DDoSecrets is sending these guys money (and there also appears to be overlap between people employed by SMAT and people employed by DDoSecrets: https://opencollective.com/smat/expenses/136086 ), that's enough for me.

  Their setup is an elasticsearch database that they populate using undisclosed methods.
  Their "backend" (smat-be) is a wrapper that just forwards requests to their elasticsearch instance. You're supposed to contact them so they provide you with connection details in the form of an .env file that you then plug into the python wrapper "backend".
  Then they have a frontend that runs in vue which is a full blown web app and does most of the analysis.
  For instance the social graph to visualize connections is done client side in javascript.
  They get around the GPL by segmenting the data along with the collection process from the webapp part.
  
  I think that it would cause immense butthurt if someone would use their code on a database populated scraped from shitty fedi outboxes. But it's too much work for just a little trolling.

  @parker @sjw @admin @p @john_rando @verita84 @mint @Moon blocking hetzner ipv6 is a security concern for us because they every regularly use entire /64s to attempt to DDoS us. preventing a service from functioning is a whole lot different than preventing federation because you don't like the dude who wrote the software and trying to equate it to that just makes you look foolish. I'm not advocating for the blocking of them but I am absolutely going to block hetzner ipv6 for our security.

I admit it's a bit hilarious how people who laugh about mastodongers spazzing out about indexing now spaz out about an indexer that now targets them, but I still adjusted my nginx config just to signalize they'd have to try harder than that if anything.

  The deal is that there's nothing really compelling. It doesn't do anything that I want to do except provide more addresses, and it fucks that up with way too many addresses. What's the payoff for the effort? The internet isn't going to stop being a complete mess, and I don't think IPv6 meaningfully changes anything for anyone besides people that hack routers and BGP advertisements, aside from obliging people to cope with a horrible notation. (And one that makes previously easy things into things that most people cannot do. I can remember 32 bits for long enough to look at it in one place and type it in another. How many people can do this with 128 bits?)

  I don't think anything is broken by IPv6, unless you mean software that does not support IPv6.

  This is not only a bad idea, it's the worst way to do it. You do it with the LAN's router. Good luck LD_PRELOAD'ing firmware on a machine that's welded shut. Sure, they should have gone with an open solution, but they didn't, and no amount of "but the checksum calculations!" is going to be worth shutting down operations.
  
  The sheer amount of unpatchable, deployed hardware that does not understand IPv6 is more massive than all of the industrial systems that still use DOS, which is also never going away. You can say it's a bug, but a thing that was working as designed and that still works as designed is not buggy. In this case, you don't like the spec it was designed for. That's fine, but trying to force the new protocol, even if it were a better protocol, never works.

  Application support for IPv6 is totally unnecessary. All we need is a local DNS resolver which, when you lookup an A record, it resolves whatever kind of address is in use on the network you're on, allocates an IP from the 127/8 range, and installs a NAT. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

  @p @sjw @admin @parker @graf @john_rando @verita84 @mint @Moon i get you prefer ipv4, i think given the right amount of technical rigor ipv6 is worth it, banning ip fragmentation, mandating link scope multicast (hopeful for site and org scope eventually) and consolidating how you compute l3 and l4 checksums make it worth it. software broken by ipv6 is a software bug, imo someone needs to make an LD_PRELOAD hack to auto promote v4 to the v6 translation layer. the required pointershit workarounds would fuckin suck tho
