@Saber Monkery is demonic and legalistic. It must be destroyed at all costs

@branman65 @Saber The father of Christian monasticism is St Anthony The Great who didn't want to be stuck around debauched sinners, for his own soul and salvation, and left for solitude and prayer. Benedict did the same thing. You can't claim monasticism is evil unless you claim the modern world is good, because its original purpose is a refuge from sin and depravity.

@BowsacNoodle @branman65 @Saber Time to go live in the Holy Mountain boys. Someone should have told @WoodshopHandman about that.

@Dicer @branman65 @Saber @WoodshopHandman Mount Athos is the most stone cold place on Earth. They take only a small number of visitors to see the monastary, and women are literally not allowed on the island. It's a holy mountain and has a monastic order which takes this very seriously.

@BowsacNoodle @Saber I could understand it if you could, say, leave the place and weren't forced to take vows. that is above all, the worst aspect of it

@branman65 @Saber That's a completely different issue than condemning the practice of monasticism. There are plenty of monks who are there temporarily, although that practice kind of stopped since people were abusing it to hide out from debt or legal issues. But some are not called to be fathers or mothers (or husbands or wives) and they know it. Wouldn't it be better to allow those people a place to be useful rather than force society to change in a way to accommodate them?

@branman65 @BowsacNoodle @Saber is that the one where paul says "it'd be better if everyone could be like me celibate but if you burn with lust get married"?

@BowsacNoodle @branman65 @Saber in the end i ain't arguing that monks and monastery's have no place, but it's probably also true that most men aren't called to this life, which makes sense when you see how few monks there are lol.

@givenup @branman65 @Saber Oh for sure. Allegedly it used to be somewhat common for second or third born sons of ye olde middle class to be pushed towards priesthood or monastic life, in part because there wasn't likely to be enough estate for them all to get a decent size. I don't think that's the way to go, but I think the idea of rejection of monasticism outright is foolish. If we formally abolished monasticism, it would just start again from a based holy man going innawoods to survive and a few random people bumping into him and recognizing the holy nature radiating from him. That's what happened for Anthony and Benedict. I have to imagine it was kind of a reluctant situation where they were forced to become teachers.

@BowsacNoodle @branman65 @Saber i'm personally of the opinion that disagreements like this in matters of faith, ought not to have name calling or taunting and rude behavior in them.

@givenup @BowsacNoodle @branman65 @Saber Ideally we’d avoid rude behavior towards fellow believers in general

@givenup @branman65 @Saber How do you not agree with what I said? I'm explaining what historically happened as I understand it and specifically not endorsing it. If it's wrong, tell me and explain.

@branman65 @BowsacNoodle @Saber i don't really argree with what he said becuase it's more a political and secular consideration than the man himself's calling, ultimately i think if a man is called by God to do w/e God calls him to do, i support him, i don't even really have a problem with them gathering together it's up to God ultimately, cuz even if God were to call oyu to celibacy doesn't mean he called you to complete isolation
