My spouse drove his car about a block's length down a street which was under water. He didn't notice exactly how deep it was as the street had no curbs against which he could gauge water depth. Ruined the engine of his year-old Chrysler 300, had to replace it.
Like you said, don't do it. Even with curbed streets don't do it because it's hard to say when water will suddenly swamp a street during/after a storm event.

@thomasfuchs @nedhamson A friend’s mother drowned in San Mateo CA driving into a Caltrain underpass. It was New Year’s Eve and pitch black. In the dark when the power goes out, water is often invisible.

I have been through many hurricanes.
Flooding is a threat but it won’t kill you deader than food borne illness, dehydration, or not having shelter because you didn’t plan for your pets.
Fill your bathtub so you can flush the toilet. That’s a more likely concern. Exciting? No.

Sorry, but after reading all these takes about how folk need to eat their freezers and lash down their pets, someone finally understands the threat is flooding and debris flows.
Particularly in the areas this storm is going to be in. The parts that recently had a massive fire so all the chaparral waxed the ground.

@akareilly @jrconlin @thomasfuchs fair but desert flooding is very different because of how little rain deserts usually get. People should definitely be concerned about flooding, as well as the things you’ve mentioned.

@thomasfuchs several years ago here, during some unusual flooding, a woman with a couple of kids in her car got out, moved a barrier, and drove through the floodwaters. Her car started washing away, she got out, the kids drowned.
Why people are so stupid I will never know.

People are now facing weather events & other issues related to #ClimateChange altering their lives, which they're not accustomed to.
I'm reminded of a scene in #ManOfSteel (the #Superman movie with #HenryCavill), where the "Kansas" family runs under a viaduct to stay safe from a #tornado.
As an #Illinois gal who has lived her whole life in #TornadoAlley, I wanted to yell at the screen when I saw it.
For God's sake--NEVER run under a viaduct to avoid a tornado! That becomes a wind tunnel, and the winds are MORE powerful there than in the open. If you're on the open road & don't feel safe in your car, you're supposed to lay down in a nearby ditch.
#Weather reports for #SevereWeather in areas which do not tend to experience that kind of event, should be instructing viewers how to stay safe. And we should be teaching children a wider variety of #WeatherSafety ideas.

@thomasfuchs I have actually been in a situation where the water came up so fast on a low-lying road we were caught in an “engine stalled and car rocked” situation. Terrifying. Thank goodness we were able to push it out of the worst and the engine restarted; we got the heck outta dodge, let me tell you.

@thomasfuchs Okie chiming in here... DO NOT DRIVE INTO A FLOOD EVEN IF YOU HAVE A JACKED UP PICKUP. You don't know what manhole covers or drain grates have been displaced by the flood. Plus pickups float easier. And if your automatic transmission gets into it, well, that breather hole's just gonna SUUUCK UP WATER, in which case hope you got a spare transmission laying around and a lift in your garage...

They just had a guy on the news, stuck in Northern California due to multiple cancelled flights to L.A. and Vegas.
His plan then is to rent a car and drive to Vegas. He plans on driving through the high desert, between L.A, and Vegas, famous for just this sort of flooding, where they are now asking people to stay indoors.
Hope he makes it somewhere safe without wrecking his rental car.

@GreenFire @carstenfranke @thomasfuchs I drove through the sea once. Hawaii. The road went through a mangrove swamp and a section of it was under water.
I stopped and waited, wondering what to do, until someone came the other way and I could see that the water was only a couple of inches deep.
