Favorites are totally meaningless plus swaggboi is always clown reacting to our posts from akkoma and we don't even know.

I feel like if you described to your past self from 2 decades ago how the web is now, they wouldn’t believe that Google search now sucks (and yet here we are)

TerkErJerbs (terkerjerbs@eattherich.club)'s status on Monday, 07-Aug-2023 13:53:03 JST TerkErJerbs @swaggboi @jmhorner That makes sense. I was overcomplicating it. I had a FB account for a few months in the late oughts or early tens and gave up on it, then skipped ahead a few years (quite a few) and got on reddit because I noticed a lot of the things I was searching engines for were answered on that network. Then got on twit in 2019 because I noticed a lot of the current and breaking events I was interested in on reddit were actually being spun off from twit and by the time it hit the subs I was following it was already 2 or 3 day old information.
Now I'm back to idgaf if all the major players are intent on stuffing my search for meaningful content with ads and dis and mis info haha. I'm into it, I'll hit the like button here. I just notice that when a doot has a dozen or more comments and boosts, it often has zero likes so I am catching on that not a lot of masto folk use it. I've wondered why that is.

JM Horner 🐝 (jmhorner@eattherich.club)'s status on Monday, 07-Aug-2023 13:53:04 JST JM Horner 🐝 @terkerjerbs I was kind of hoping you'd get a reply to this right away. I like to think I have some technical skillz, but social networking services are not my thing. The only social-like service I ever had an account on was Facebook, and that is long gone.
Having said that, in my short time here on Masto, I have kind of come to the conclusion that if I favourite a post then I am telling the person who posted it that I like it... while boosting will tell that person I like it AND will share the post with anyone who follows me.
Hopefully someone else will chime in and tell me how far off I am. :-)

TerkErJerbs (terkerjerbs@eattherich.club)'s status on Monday, 07-Aug-2023 13:53:05 JST TerkErJerbs I'm not a huge fan of corporate algo social media stuff but can someone splain to me what the fedi `like'` or `favorite'` button does on Masto? In the (so-called) established social media-verse that option trains the AI to feed other folk in a similar cohort more of that content. What does it do here?
I'm new to Fed. Please be kind. I'm lazily reverse-engineering my vaguely conscious experience on mainstream social media platforms and realizing that this like/favorite button has been designed for over a decade to feed the 'likers' more content that will compell them to invest ever-more attention. What does it do here, exactly?
A happy side effect of this is making the poster feel good, but that has never been the goal (in the default social media space), it's always been for the benefit of the platform to hold and spread engagement. What can we do with it here in the fediverse instead? It's not a boost. It's not a follow. *What is it?*
