still reeling from reading a thread yesterday where a project leader was like "we're moving off reddit because platforms owned by corporations consistently ruin the communities built on them; this happens every time and we want to get away from it, any suggestions?" and a bunch of people were like "what about discord"

I cannot begin to comprehend what is going on in the mind palace of this kind of reply guy; did you even read the question

@mattly @technomancy forgetting the idiosyncrasies here, I've never quite understood the idea of moving from a static web service (whether that be Reddit/Twitter or Kbin/GNU Social) to an IM service (whether that be Messenger/Discord or Telegram/Matrix/IRC/XMPP). They aren't even trying to scratch the same itch, are they?

Sometimes I wonder if one day we'll go back to email, including Mail-lists and #chatClients like #DeltaChat.

@ChaosSpectre @glitzersachen this has nothing to do with corporate mindset; the project was a Linux distro which I assume is run by people in their spare time

@glitzersachen @technomancy Seems to be the common mindset; short term profits over long term stability/planning. Explains why all of management sucks these days, none of them are true leaders with vision and integrity once money is involved.

@ChaosSpectre @technomancy only that companies these days have an IT strategy and IT beholden to that strategy. Which says often: Put everything in the cloud.
They are really allergic to upfront investment, so investing in an owned setup instead of just licensing a service year by year is practically a no-no these days.
I don't get it either, but the corporate mindset is very ok with not owning their own infrastructure.

@technomancy I think it hasn't set in for people that discord is also a corporation for some reason. Fortunately with the constant push for nitro subs and the new name system pushing more of a "social media" approach, they too will push more people off their platform.

Companies should hire internal tool teams that use open source resources to make custom solutions. Matrix, fedi, nextcloud, bitwarden, just anything the security and open source conscious community is using and actively modifying. If I can set this stuff up on my home server, there's zero reason a company can't do the same at scale.

@technomancy good luck getting any given person to not use a Thing on the Internet. most of my adult life has been spent begging my friends and acquaintances to stay away from X, Y or Z site. nobody ever listens.

@Anarkat plenty of other people already had by the time I saw the thread; I don't think my input would have been helpful at that point

I think the project maintainer will make the right move in this case (asahi linux); I was just baffled by that one particular pattern in the responses

@technomancy someone I know pitched hosting an industry mastodon server. It was shut down by an exec who said “Elon is doing great things at Twitter! Why would we leave?”

@technomancy this hit hard for me this week since we lost our notes from a meeting we had two weeks ago. Discord just ate them.
