Took it for a year, didn't help anything behavioural but he doubled in weight. His mother took it off him after a year or two and his behaviour improved. The weight has stayed but that's more related to parenting/lifestyle

  All they have to do is come up with an extraction process, patent and trademark that. No one will be allowed to sell the natural version.
  
  Keep in mind, the FDA has allowed companies to patent freely available generic medicines which have been in widespread use for over a century because they agreed to do some token studies on expanding their use.

  You can't patent a natural substance. You can patent a production process, e.g. production of lovaza. But purity (or mercury content) isn't an issue with dmae. So there's no reason to patent it and no reason to seek approval without a patent. And again, it's as effective as prescription adhd medications, but without the side effects.

  Patents aren't based on reason though, they're based on bribery. All they'd have to do is tweak the existing production process plausibly and patent that, then get the existing version on the controlled substances list.
  
  The reason no one will do this is because whoever's making ritalin already has ritalin, and no one else particularly wants to go to war with them.
  
  If DMAE became sufficiently popular it absolutely would be outlawed purely because of it's potential to compete with ritalin. Same way the only opioids we're legally allowed access to are ones made by the jews.

  3. Make sure your guys are all lined up in the right spots when you apply for a patent
  
  4. Bribe a few more swamp critters to ban the existing substances
  
  5. "Incentivise" doctors and hospitals to push your new drug by cutting them in on the deal

  I just have opinions on what SCOTUS would do if the case was brought before it. Only God knows what would happen in the lower state or federal courts (depending on where the action originates). At the trial level in either court, judges are randomly assigned, and I have little faith in the California appellate courts or the California Supreme Court or the 9th Circuit.

  Plenty of homeopathic stores sell willow bark pills. It's not some wide ranging conspiracy, it's industrialization. Producing enough willow trees to put willow bark in every wal mart in america is very expensive. Much cheaper to synthezise it, and eventually make E. Coli produce it.
  This is why drug discovery proceeds in this way;
  Step 1: find natural product that does something.
  Step 2: Find out which part of the natural product is active.
  Step 3: Find a way to make that active form from some other component.
  Step 4: Get E. Coli to grow it.

  The problem with willow bark is that it is far harsher on the gastrointestinal tract than aspirin, which can itself be pretty bad.
  
  A better example of a retarded drug is Vayarin. It's basically just a phosphatidylserine bound to omega-3 with epa added. The PS-O3 molecule just breaks into PS and O3 in the body. They created the drug after it was discovered that this combination of fatty acids could aid nutritional deficiencies and cellular repair to lessen the effects of adhd. They claim you can't get the same effect by taking PS, O3, and EPA alone, which they know is bullshit, because the studies show otherwise. They also claim their brand is a specially balanced brand.
  
  Nonetheless, changing a molecule isn't as easy as it sounds. It can competely change the effect, or cause the substance to have no effect at all.
  
  The main wall is really the cost of getting FDA approval, which is usually only worth it if you have the exclusive right to produce. Without it, the substance can't be prescribed, nor can it be advertised as curing a disease, and for that reason, generally isn't a competitor. Natural supplements fall into this category.
  
  The next step is to attack any claims that a natural substance can have an effect by influencing discussions and questioning the effectiveness or quality of supplements, generally, this includes spreading theories like "if it worked, someone would find a way to patent it." Basically, you've bought big pharma's propoganda and are repeating it. Qui bono?

  The base molecule is salicin, which is different from acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin). I don't see why that's an issue, drugs don't come from nothing.
  Could someone modify DMAE and patent the modification and sell that? Sure. And then through marketing drive down awareness of the other molecule? Sure. But, like aspirin it might be better in some ways than DMAE and worse than others.

  Probably.
  Sure, I've never tried it to know. I plan on letting my kids run around 16 hours out of the day if they have "adhd" but who knows if that's gonna be possible.

  I have to use it myself otherwise I'll start reading emails from clients and find myself working on something totally random ten minutes later, like my .bashrc. It keeps me focused on what I have to get done.
  
  It's very subtle though. It's not going to get you high like stims. If that's what someone is going for, stick to amphetamines. It can tank your choline levels after a few days (they theorize that it pulls choline out of tissue making it available for the production of acetylcholine), so I'd keep some CDP Choline or Choline bitartrate on hand.

  It did expire, but they couldn't get it renewed for a similar reason to why they lost the trademark. They lost trademark "aspirin" because it became associated with the generic substance and not the origin of it being from Bayer. The patent was lost / non-renewable after expiration because everyone was making it at that point, particularly in Europe, and those products were making into United States markets.

  It looks like the did make a prescription drug from it by making a synthetic ester. DMAE is easy easier and cheaper to get. You can buy it by the kilo.
