All that does feel like some big new steps.
So does moving to integrate Mastodon identify verification into #Wikimedia software itself.

It's about the software that powers #Wikipedia and they just launched a number of new accounts on Mastodon, and also just started to integrate it so that anyone who is a Wikimedia/Wikipedia user, can easily verify themselves to their Mastodon profile, making it easier for them to find each other here, and making their Mastodon accounts verified this way, and thus less vulnerable to imposter accounts.

I had some earlier discussions with @mike_hales @bashrc and @bhaugen that led me to pen down some notes on how I'd like to see #Fediverse #SocialNetworking and #Wiki technology to be combined, in what I called "Social Knowledge Fabrics".

Everywhere I see personal knowledge base software projects pop up. Imho collective knowledge gardening is way to go.

Think Wikimedia Commons videos on PeerTube. Wikimedia Commons photos on Pixelfed. Talk pages visible from Lemmy.

Nice! #FediDevs is a new initiative started by @gabek and still figuring out scope + objectives.
But among goals is to find practical ways to improve #interoperability of the existing #Fediverse, so that onboarding becomes easier for new #ActivityPub devs, and also to look at improving #UX of federated apps.
It is good to have people around working on different types of applications. Focus is heavy on #microblogging, but we need #forum + #wiki's too.

Hi, I'm jumping there as I'm one of the developer of the XWiki activitypub extension along with @mleduc. To be honest we haven't really kept maintaining the extension since we released it two years ago, so there's a lot of work remaining on it. Our principal goal back then was to see how we could allow to follow a wiki on the fediverse and receive automatically updates over the changes made on pages.

Maybe you could shoot those issues in the @XWiki project tracker for the extension. Also #XWiki devs might join @fedidevs on #Matrix where hands-on technical stuff is discussed + join #SocialHub where they might get their own software category.

FWIW, I tried doing a Docker install of XWiki with the #ActivityPub extension and have run into several bugs that prevent Mastodon from being able to follow my XWiki user. They use a nonstandard webfinger endpoint, but I worked around that. Another AP extension issue seems to be related to my reverse proxy. The JSON-LD actor data is missing the security context and mixes public and LAN domains in the URLs.

Nope, two different solutions entirely. I think maybe some lessons and choices from Xwiki, that is live now, might inform MediaWiki.
