@sim @xjix nobles had to study war. they got special treatment but many of them were still willing or expected to die for it. they also tended to be tied to the land (titles weren't fungible.)
they had skin in the game. people like pfizer don't. they don't give a flying fuck about the country.-

@icedquinn @xjix @sim > infectious disease was such a solved issue
Antivacc is on the rise and we're running out of novel antibiotics that bacteria aren't resistant to.
You're never "done" managing infectious disease, no need to manufacture any crises to stay relevant.

@sim @xjix there is also the Shirky principle which states organizations tend to perpetuate the reason for their existence.
For instance infectious disease was such a solved issue the CDC was almost dissolved (The Real Anthony Faucy, RFK Jr) until they scored H1N1 and resumed health terrorism to justify keeping it around. Cold War ended but the NSA is still here clowning computers. Violent crime is low so the FBI is manufacturing militias. etc. Nobody has any skin in the game, it's just beurocrats making up reasons why the world will end if their useless jobs are closed. -

@Hyolobrika @galena @sim @xjix i used to call it 'non-fungible power' because your authority was hard tied to the societal circumstance. you can abandon it and be a commoner, but you can't trade a french title for a dutch one on the open market. fungible power has no such restriction; you can exactly trade out your USD for CHF. clacke likes this. -

@Hyolobrika @galena @xjix @sim keeping you happy wasn't really a goal, but feudalism consists of reciprocal obligations nontheless. -

@galena
So, "lord" here means "CEO of multinational corpo"? What's the analogue of "territory"?

@icedquinn @sim @xjix The big difference between traditional feudalism and neofeudalism is that in traditional feudalism your lord lived in or near your town, his territory was right outside his door, and keeping his subjects at least marginally happy was mandatory for his continued existence. In neofeudalism, your lord live in a private mansion half the world away and has territory all throughout the planet, and the less happy his subjects are, the more profit he's able to extract selling them "cures" for the misery he inflicts upon them. -

@galena @Hyolobrika @sim @xjix FWIW Rome said the same thing. Some roles like Consuls were restricted to living in their home district for some decade after holding office. Near-absolute power as a Consul, and then house arrest after. Hope you didn't piss everyone off :blobcatwhistle: clacke likes this. -

@galena @Hyolobrika @xjix @sim tim pool talked about this in one episode. no amount of restriction before voting helps; you just wait it out, vote shit, and skedattle. but being unable to leave *after* voting shit policy means you have to live in your own bed after shitting it.
feudal lords had to live in their own bed after shitting it, or abandon being a lord. they couldn't pack up and shit another bed. -

@Hyolobrika @galena @sim @xjix i think some groups call this neo-colonialism, what we live in now. colonials used to take over a nation state to extract its resources. but they had to install governors to run it. under neocolonial doctrine the power holders have a puppet state who takes the brunt of public hatred but the CEO's just enjoy the proceeds. this leads to the whole moussolini fascism (public-private partnerships) where the power is actually owned by outside the state, and the state is just a flexing device whos job is to take the beating for the people actually doing shit.
similar to how places like Shell dominate Africa without having to pay to govern it.clacke likes this.
