    @thomasfuchs These narratives are so pervasive and self-reinforcing. For instance, people always claim how far ahead Google are in machine translation and yet it’s not my experience. Here’s just one example between Apple’s built in translation vs Google’s online translation.

    Look at how much better Apple’s translation is.

      "Back to the office" einfach erklärt: Drei Männer sind auf einer einsamen Insel gestrandet. Sie finden eine Flasche mit einem Geist. Der befreite Flaschengeist gewährt jedem einen Wunsch. "Ich würde gerne wieder bei meiner Frau sein. Bring mich nach Hause." Schwupps, weg isser. "Ich würde so gerne meine Kinder wieder sehen". Schwupps, weg isser. "Ohne meine Kumpels ist mir so langweilig. Bring sie zurück." Schwupps, sind sie wieder auf der Insel.

      @thomasfuchs: Which, in turn, is funny because not so long ago, Apple was known for its conspicuous Reality Distortion Field generators.

      @thomasfuchs I think the argument that Apple is behind on AI is definitely wrong, but I think a reasonable argument is that Apple is behind on AI tools and APIs for third-party devs. Core ML and Create ML are not as good as competitors, that’s a fact. And the gap is getting wider. And that’s to say nothing of the hindrance not being able to run CUDA poses for us Mac users.

      @thomasfuchs oh, for that I totally agree. (I was even going to clarify that my tweet was wholly unrelated to LLMs). And as far as integrating AI seamlessly into their own products, I think Apple is second only to Google (Google Photos and Pixel’s Camera remain just phenomenal). But I do worry about the tooling/API situation.

      @simon @thomasfuchs same. Although my short-pitch/explainer for GitHub Copilot has been “ChatGPT for code” since December. The irony is Copilot is 18 months older than ChatGPT, uses the same GPT engine, has had some of the fame features (explain code block, ask it to write code for you) but has maybe 1% of the name recognition.

      @simon @thomasfuchs I am probably annoyingly fastidious in referring to generative AI as much as possible precisely because I want to be specific with what we are talking about. The generative stuff is the most exciting for me personally right now, but I would never pretend it represents all or even most of AI, nor that it should become the new name.

      @film_girl @thomasfuchs Yeah I've been fastidious about using the "generativeai" tag on my blog, but I do worry that the more general audience that I'm hoping to reach with some of my writing won't know what "generative AI" means, or what "large language models" are either

      I really don't want to have to stick the "ChatGPT" term on everything just so people know what I'm talking about though!

      @thomasfuchs @film_girl Did you see this? Frustratingly I think there's a good chance that "AI" referring to generative models may rapidly become the unavoidable common meaning, in the same way that "crypto" doesn't mean cryptography for most people any more: https://simonwillison.net/2023/Mar/15/ai/

      @steve @thomasfuchs @vowe It’s cute, isn’t it? If you know German you can reconstruct the original from the nonsensical English but it’s very clearly a machine translation.

      @finestructure @steve @thomasfuchs @vowe Thoughts on DeepL? Here's the German after re-translation to Eng:
      ""Back to the office" explained simply:
      Three men are stranded on a deserted island. They find a bottle containing a genie. The freed genie grants each a wish. "I want to be back with my wife. Take me home." Poof, away he goes. "I would like to see my children again".
      And then he's gone again. "I'm so bored without my buddies. Bring them back." And in no time they're back on the island."

      @finestructure @thomasfuchs @vowe the “sie” confusion is such a hallmark of new-style translation shittiness. They weren’t perfect, but good-old structured language models got this right most of the time.
