Did you know you can link your Wordpress blog directly to the Fediverse and Mastodon?

    1. Install the ActivityPub plugin
    2
. Configure it - give yourself a username - in my case, jcarroll@jimcarroll.com

    3. Your blog is now on the Fediverse, and anyone who follows the account will see any new post you do.

So I just posted this - and since I follow from my other account - it just appears as a post in the stream.

    4. Make people aware!

So if you want any new blog posts I do (disruption, creativity, transformation etc) follow @JimCarroll@jimcarroll.com

    @atomicpoet told me about this.

@mildpeach @JimCarroll@jimcarroll.com @atomicpoet @mmeadway One word. WordFence. No issues at the Wordpress level once installed.

Abandonded my WP bloG a few years ago due to the lackluster attitude of the service with regard to security. Is the service any better now?

@mildpeach @mmeadway @JimCarroll@jimcarroll.com @atomicpoet Not quite sure about the security concern you might cite. It's a Wordpress plugin. It shares a link via ActivityPub out to those who follow it using the same protocol. It's not doing much more than that. RSS does pretty much the same type of thing.

@mmeadway @jimcarroll@futurist.info @JimCarroll@jimcarroll.com @atomicpoet Having had to deal with security in a practical manner myself I find myself queasy when well meaning ‘experts’ advocate for spreading potential vulnerabilities via federated resources. My limited experiences with federated systems taught me that federations only work went secured systems are kept secure to those they link to. (Awkwardly wordy, huh?)

@mildpeach @jimcarroll@futurist.info @JimCarroll@jimcarroll.com @atomicpoet I thought the WP tie-in was rather neat and a good example of how to connect things, which is why I boosted the post. As to WP itself...not a fan for the same reasons you cite.

@mildpeach @mmeadway @JimCarroll@jimcarroll.com @atomicpoet If you pay attention security it can be mitigated to a reasonable extent, never eliminated. Wordfence (as with many other tools) is not hot air. If it (and other tools) then the folks over at infosec.exchange who have built entire careers and industries around mitigating issues would be shocked to learn that you suggest all their efforts are in vein.

Go for a walk. Try not be to cranky. It's a beautiful day.

Chalk my comments up to the operational concerns of someone who was personally responsible (by law) monetarily for security breachs of any magnitude. I’m aware that isn’t common diligence in popular contemporary technology. I’ve never experienced the use of a single tool that could manage security in and of itself. Wordfence looks helpful but that would be all it is if their PR is to be believed. Please accept my apologies for being cranky.

@jimcarroll@futurist.info @JimCarroll@jimcarroll.com @atomicpoet As I understand it, this plugin published blog posts as a post to Fediverse and any replies to this post will be posted back as a comment to the blog post. What about native comments posted directly at the blogsite? Will they appear as a reply in the Fediverse? Also, can the blog owner follow people in the Fediverse and view the resultant timeline? TIA

@aswath @JimCarroll@jimcarroll.com @atomicpoet I don't allow comments on my blog; I think that many folks disabled comments within Wordpress due to the arrival of the rage-bait-troll-hate machine. I don't see anywhere within the plugin that it supports comments back and forth, I doubt it does,

It's only a one way thing as far as I can see. Just for people to follow your posts. It's kind of moot, since I put a link/commetnary to most of my blog posts here.

But it might be of interest to some folks.

@dragonfrog @JimCarroll@jimcarroll.com @atomicpoet Since I don't allow comments on my blog post, no.

I am not sure if it would if I allowed comments.

I think many people abandoned Wordpress commenting years ago since it was so abused.

@jimcarroll@futurist.info @JimCarroll@jimcarroll.com @atomicpoet Nice! If someone replies to your post via their Fediverse view of the post, does it also show up as a comment on your blog site?
