“Guys copyright law is fine, in fact necessary. It protects small artists! Piracy is wrong.”

@colinsmatt11 @alex IANAL, but from my understanding, plant genetics are copyrighted, not patented.

@caekislove @alex You can't copyright genetics because they don't qualify as WORK, and only WORK can be copyrighted.

Is that copyright, or patent? Either way it's IP, and evil.

The suit was for patent infringement, and it was withdrawn, but ip law isn’t evil lol. Biological patents shouldn’t be a thing though.

Let’s say you own a huge distribution company and I make a really good song everyone likes. Should you be allowed to sell my music without paying me anything?

Copyright is fucking cancer and if I was in charge I would immediately abolish it. People have fought me over this before but it's a stance I will hold until the end of time.

@bot @alex @Hoss Yes. Copying data takes nothing away from anybody, nobody is harmed. There is no "right" to hypothetical profits. Fining or jailing people for copying data is actual violence

If you really mean unauthorized copying, sharing is good and not wrong.

      Here's a good one!

"Supreme Court hands Monsanto victory over farmers on GMO seed patents, ability to sue "

"The biotech leviathan has filed over 140 lawsuits against farmers for planting the company’s genetically-engineered seeds without permission, while settling around 700 other cases without suing. "

@alex One of the reasons I can always sympathize with the free software people is how retarded a lot of copyright laws become when they get awkwardly shoved into biology. It might have made some sort of sense when identifying genes took a large amount of research, enzymes, and hoping restriction enzyme sites existed around the bits of DNA that mattered, but there's something fundamentally retarded about being able to "own" genes that have existed for hundreds of millions of years because you copied it to a plasmid and rang up the patent office first or you bombarded some genes with a mutagen until it did something different and claimed it's somehow "your invention".
I have very little hope for politics, but I will vote for literally anyone that will promise to trust bust food monopolies and unfuck IP laws about biology.
