This is important. Self-care is job 0. Keeping yourself together is a prerequisite to everything else.

The original Tron came out just as I was getting into computers. During the initial theatrical run, I managed to see it nine times. I have no idea how many times I have seen it since then. You could say I was kinda into that movie. https://mastodon.social/@flargh/114287999360815261
Kent Brockman: I, for one, welcome our new LLM overlords.
@futurebird What gives me hope is areas in the US with dense population are consistently blue. What that tells me is people exposed to people who are different from them usually figure out that those differences are OK and people are people.
That said, the current political tenor here scares the crap out of me. I don’t see the path out yet.

I am gradually making peace with the idea that if I want coffee then I am going to have to get out of bed.
@clacke Oh yes. I thought you’d shared two pictures of Tamboor, one in character and one out. I’d forgotten all about Schiavelli and probably hadn’t known his name.
@lain What a flub.
Our man in DC, one @benjaminwittes conducted another of his Special Military Operations last night, projecting messages about the #Ukraine war on the side of the Russian Embassy.
@dansup @EdanOsborne Moreover, you’ll find similar language in the terms of most any social media app. If you want to post your pictures or whatnot, the host needs your permission to share them on your timeline.
@goatsarah @flockofnazguls Amazing photo!
@maskedscheduler @DemocracyMattersALot Yeah, I’ve been contemplating the same, along with WaPo. The question for me is where do I get my news then? The other big players are pretty fluffy.
The Economist is probably the answer.
@BushHut @maskedscheduler @DemocracyMattersALot Depth is a factor too. For all the faults of WaPo and NYT, they also do some extraordinary, in-depth reporting which few outlets can match. There are many ways to get a high level skim of what is going on in the world but not many which get into the nitty gritty.
Many other news sources, including most TV reporting, rely in large part on the big, old-fashioned print publications as the basis of their stories.
@BushHut @maskedscheduler @DemocracyMattersALot I can do that with WaPo and NYT just fine but it has gotten to the point where the good (and often great) reporting is overshadowed by their shit editorial approaches. I’m no longer comfortable giving them my money.
@BushHut @maskedscheduler @DemocracyMattersALot Most of the outlets doing real, high quality journalism are pretty conservative. WSJ does amazing reporting but their editorial slant is incomprehensibly evil.
At the end of the day, the only way for us to be well-informed is, at least in part, to serve as our own bullshit filters. That is, to be able to read or hear a story and discern what portions are credible, which are not, and what might be missing.
@cstross @spaf To be fair, my work running #InfoSec programs largely comes down to stochastic regurgitation. We mostly see the same problems and situations from company to company.
@br00t4c @DemocracyMattersALot We’re so fucked.
@Viss @paco The way I explain it to clients is we can tick every compliance box and still do a poor job managing risk. If we do a good job managing risk then compliance gets easy.
@mark @grammargirl Even 25 years ago there were managers with visible tattoos at [large western bank you’ve definitely heard of]. In 2023 are there still companies where tattoos are a problem? That attitude is hard to grok.
Maybe next time I interview I want to have my ink visible just to weed those companies out. :)
