mkb (mkb@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 09-Jul-2024 12:28:56 JST mkb @maskedscheduler @DemocracyMattersALot Yeah, I’ve been contemplating the same, along with WaPo. The question for me is where do I get my news then? The other big players are pretty fluffy.
The Economist is probably the answer.

mkb (mkb@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 09-Jul-2024 12:28:52 JST mkb @BushHut @maskedscheduler @DemocracyMattersALot Depth is a factor too. For all the faults of WaPo and NYT, they also do some extraordinary, in-depth reporting which few outlets can match. There are many ways to get a high level skim of what is going on in the world but not many which get into the nitty gritty.
Many other news sources, including most TV reporting, rely in large part on the big, old-fashioned print publications as the basis of their stories.

mkb (mkb@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 09-Jul-2024 12:28:51 JST mkb @BushHut @maskedscheduler @DemocracyMattersALot I can do that with WaPo and NYT just fine but it has gotten to the point where the good (and often great) reporting is overshadowed by their shit editorial approaches. I’m no longer comfortable giving them my money.

mkb (mkb@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 09-Jul-2024 12:28:51 JST mkb @BushHut @maskedscheduler @DemocracyMattersALot Most of the outlets doing real, high quality journalism are pretty conservative. WSJ does amazing reporting but their editorial slant is incomprehensibly evil.
At the end of the day, the only way for us to be well-informed is, at least in part, to serve as our own bullshit filters. That is, to be able to read or hear a story and discern what portions are credible, which are not, and what might be missing.

mkb (mkb@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 14-Jan-2024 13:03:52 JST mkb @mark @grammargirl Even 25 years ago there were managers with visible tattoos at [large western bank you’ve definitely heard of]. In 2023 are there still companies where tattoos are a problem? That attitude is hard to grok.
Maybe next time I interview I want to have my ink visible just to weed those companies out. :)

mkb (mkb@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 24-Dec-2023 10:25:17 JST mkb I am repeating my request for a term to describe the confluence of confirmation bias and schadenfreude.
That is, I irrationally dislike Foo, news comes out that Foo is bad in some way, then I feel smugly justified in my irrational dislike as though I knew all along.
(See Substack.)
Surely someone has already coined a term for this. @grammargirl, have you any thoughts?

mkb (mkb@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 22-Dec-2023 07:16:15 JST mkb @Kalshann @rysiek What saddens me is there is actual research on the effects of deplatforming.
Some of the “deplatforming doesn’t work” arguments are reasonable on their face but research shows deplatforming is effective despite the downsides.

How is SL these days? I’ve scarcely touched it since the aughts but often miss it.

Cash bail, credit scores, #ViolentPolice, how we pay for healthcare, how we fund our schools, zoning, “the Civil War was about states rights”, the war on drugs, student loans, unpaid internships, tolerance of nazis, loose environmental regulation, food deserts
