#KDE #plasma wants to make their desktop environment as good as Windows or even better; #GNOME has no respect for Windows and wants to make the best desktop they can.

As a result: Plasma is Windows but with a good kernel and community and no malware included, and GNOME is the best preconfigured experience available anywhere for any device.

Windows is the least user friendly option available today, why would you try to model your UX after it ...

Does anyone know of a user friendly registrar that is not abusive to its customers?

Do not use #cloudflare thinking that you will be able to control your site. They are a dangerous company to work with, I've heard horror stories of big companies being threatened with brand new $100k bills. Now here I am as an individual, If you want to transfer you have to first allow them to proxy your traffic (eg MITM your site). If you do transfer a domain to them they take away your option to use your own nameserver, it costs 200 $/mo to get the feature back, its free everywhere else.

I hate that we have inverted the meaning of the word "search" in the context of software searching. "To search" used to mean that you had to hunt for something in a pile of irrelevant stuff, now "to search" means to be handed answers without searching for them.

I have never known a piece of software that is more difficult to configure than vim and neovim.

I think that a lot of users are oblivious to how bad it is because they just pipe a shell script from curl into their shell, and it works, and they did not have to actually do the configuring. Or they struggle for longer than they would ever admit and just pretend that it isn't that bad because they don't want to look bad.

@vestige and that might* be part of why DELLs are more expensive than other brands for Windows machines.

@vestige also I think Microsoft gives out licences to OEMs much cheaper in exchange for pretending that Windows is the only way to use a computer.

We are not quite ready for #freesoftware/hardware purism. We must life where we are and push toward where we want to go, or we will die.

If we refused to use proprietary software or hardware in the beginning, it would have been prohibitively expensive to write the first free software.

Still today, if you insist on completely open hardware or nothing, you simply can't have anything.

We will get there in time, keep pushing forward.

Of course games with purchases often* exploit child psychology for profit in a way that I consider to be abusive. Exploiting adults is done too of course, but from personal experience, they were able to profit off me way more when my brain was not fully developed, they were able to get be to spend when I did not want to.

Where I am: I use only #freesoftware and standard Linux with non-free blobs so I can use WiFi on my laptop. I won't buy NVIDIA for example.

My personal journey has caught up to what is right for today's crappy world where most scams are completely legal and too few people know about them to make a difference.

    Someday things will be better.

Also I play one time purchase proprietary games. Because there is no moral issue with them IMO.

#Windows is only free if you don't value any of the following: productivity, ability, convenience, time, freedoms, property, privacy or eyes

#Linux is only free if you are not afraid to learn something new.

Is there any reason to think that the binary blobs or obfuscated code included in the #LinuxKernel is trustworthy or safe?

I love #gnome, i think its the best DE, but the files app leaves a lot to be desired, it copies files so so slowly when compared to the usual command line utilities, and you cant find out any information about ongoing operations, all you get is the type and progress of the operation and the base dir of the destination for transfers. Its so bad. On the other hand it looks really great.

The world needs more people capable of thinking that someone is good person and that they deserve human treatment, but also disagreeing with them. More people capable of thinking that someone stands for something good while believing their execution is flawed, or that their subgoal is unimportant or even counterproductive.

Just because you agree with some groups mission, does not mean that every member is completely infallible. That's insane, but that's groupthink.

If your #freesoftware #opensource app asks me to choose if I want #telemetry on or off I will choose on (if the shared info is acceptable), if you have telemetry on by default or have it mandatory and I will not use your app at all.

@mark an ads and tracking firm puts unique codes on a redirect wrapper on exports from their product, that a malicious user can simply delete, not to track anyone, but to protect users from web publishers who want to push malicious links to other malicious sites, but don't know how to operate a text editor to fix the link or how to program their website.

That sounds much more plausible now that you say it ...
Seriously tho, the idea from @villetakanen that its a bug makes a lot more sense.
