   @Joe_0237 It's simply because email was one of the first widely-compatible messaging protocols and it managed to cement itself.
   
   SMTP isn't that bad of a protocol (considering you can send an email with only netcat), the issues seem to stem from the insanity of HMTL (and JavaScript!) in emails and the amount of spam mail and the amount of ineffective and censorus methods used to try to mitigate spam.

     Email is the worst communication system in existence, im trying to set up a mail server, why has it become so universal?
