the only time i ever made new real life friends from online interaction was through #fidonet

(i have made many more online acquaintances, but none i'd call real friends to date)

no offense but this sounds more like a tip to get off of mastodon. absolutely bonkers trying to figure this place out
NYT is calling it an "Election Inquiry"
WAPO "Election Charges"
LA Times "Election Lies" and "Legal Problems"
Boston Globe can't bring themselves to say anything more than "the Trump Indictments"
I don't have the stomach to look further
@binarytango @feditips nice to hear, but it also reinforces that there are technical aspects to #mastodon that make it harder for non-techies to make use of it. i assumed i could probably do *something* to make a solo server work, but i didn't want to have to face that learning curve, nor spend the time required when it was just easier to go back to a big server
but i appreciate your positivity
@feditips sure, but my advice to fellow noobs is, "Don't do it!"
I did it. It was easy. It was affordable. It felt so cool to have my own server/domain. Then I discovered that the amount of content I could see from other servers was almost non-existent.
Apparently, the number of users in an instance has some kind of network effect that I don't fully understand. As a brand new instance with one user, I only saw content directly from people I followed. Most of the other content I was used to seeing on my previous large public server just vanished.
Related to this is some kind of arcane technical limitation that means long threads appear completely different to different people. Say a thread has 40 replies... I only see a percentage of them based on... I don't know but it has something to do with my instance and the number of users on it? I can't grok this place and I'm a web developer, former sysadmin, and used to run a Fidonet BBS (meaning I been online a long time).

"possible" is the word that threw me off. like, these *might* be magic words but we're not sure
