When you follow someone on Mastodon, you will see their replies in your Home timeline only if:

    -They mention you

    OR

-They mention someone else you follow

    OR

-They are replying to themselves to build a thread

This applies to replies with public, unlisted or followers-only visibilities.

However, you can browse all their replies (including replies to people you don't follow) by going to their profile page and clicking on the "Posts & Replies" tab.

🤔 ...umm... I think so. Boosts should go to all your followers.

@feditips does it count as someone boosting their reply if they themselves boost it, for these purposes?

Just to be clear, the Home timeline will show all posts from all the people you follow.

The above conditions are only about which replies you see in the Home timeline.

I think the idea of the conditions is to avoid potentially irrelevant replies clogging up the timeline? If someone replies a lot to people you're not interested in, that might dilute the relevancy of the timeline?

@feditips That's a weakness. If users want to see everything posted by an account they follow, they should not need to find that account's profile page and go looking.

Especially for time sensitive matters and events. If I follow someone specifically to see their posts about a news event, I want to see them in my timeline, along with posts from the other accounts I follow for the same reason.

@feditips If I follow X, I want to see all X's posts, whether or not they are replies.

if developers want to give users an option to hide replies to others by people they follow, that's fine. Developers should not arbitrarily hide posts from users.

It's an open platform, so if a third party app maker wants to do it that way they can do. Perhaps some do already?

@feditips I'll look. I'm typically not happy with apps compared to using a browser.

There are alternative browser interfaces too, for example @elk and @semaphore

I don't know if they do what you're wanting though... If I see something that does do what you want, I'll do a post about it 👍

You don't have to know these things to use this place, I was only posting this because someone had asked.

Facebook, Twitter etc are much worse as they use complex algorithms which aren't available to the public. No one knows why they place items in people's timelines.
