Oh just learned that the Mammoth app on iOS for Mastodon is VC-backed.
So, yeah, don't use that one.

"We have VC funding" is like the best reason to not use something, when you're on the fediverse
@vsp That'd be very helpful, actually!
Some sort of resource that lists local grants and other funding options, for instance.
@vsp I am going to point out that VC funding has not resulted in an awesome internet in the *slightest*
@vsp Netscape, maybe?
techbro: I'm gonna write code to take advantage of all this juicy Mastodon data!
Techbro, shortly later: wow the Mastodon people are really unpleasant to people who take advantage of all that data, and that makes me sad and now I won't make tools that unethically take advantage of all the data
Me: System working as designed.
One of the things I find most refreshing and nice about fedi is the extremely strong reaction people have to techbros coming in and trying to do things that are gross
it's really nice
Looking at the fediblock hashtag and going ugh oh look yet another person going "wait there needs to be an appeals process and due process for getting defederated"

How do you think this will work? It's a loose federation of instances that all kinda collectively create a consensus of acceptable behaviour. Each admin is gonna make their own calls on this stuff.
this isn't ... this doesn't ... this isn't a singular network
@silverwizard Pure Gleason taint
I can understand if new admins don't know that Soapbox is bigotware and they'll be defederated nearly instantly for running it...
but Soapbox is bigotware and you'll be defederated almost instantly for running it
@whetstone Comment onto the issue, I think
@whetstone You're right, users can vote with their feet and move to another instance with moderation practices more to their liking.
I don't think that feature exists yet - you could maybe open a GitHub issue for it?
Did you see this piece on why defederation works? https://escapingtech.com/tech/opinions/i-was-wrong-about-mastodon-moderation.html
and getting outraged that fedi just ... doesn't act like that?
These arguments are always accompanied by assertions that users should have "individual choice" to decide to block individuals or users.
Again, I think this might be coming from that initial "but it's a single platform" mentality, making me, the admin who defederates to protect my users, a bad person because I am damaging The Platform
So one of the things that has cropped up again and again is how "defederation is a punishment" or "a weapon".
And I keep thinking about this, because I keep thinking about where my logic chain is diverting from theirs when they say these things.
I think one of the fundamental pieces might be that they've been taught to think of a social network as a Platform, and are trying to apply that to fedi?
Interesting that one of the first Main Characters of fedi turns out to be a Brand™ using birdsite tactics and being surprised when they don't work
so, planning on spinning up an instance for small businesses in Aotearoa New Zealand.
It'll be paid, like Cloud Island, and use the Cloud Island tech stack, and use a subscribed blocklist.
I'll be admin and moderator of this instance.
Are you/your company interested in being on this instance? DM me if you are, or email me at aurynn@eiara.nz.
Boosting this would be helpful.
This is a really good piece on why defederation works, and works well, for ensuring that we maintain a better fediverse.

One of the things about Tumblr and potentially Flickr adopting ActivityPub is that it brings the feeling of mid-2000s internet back, when we had APIs and were encouraged to build cool new interconnections. Before the web was stolen from us by advertising companies.
Proposed resolution:
When Tumblr joins the fediverse by implementing ActivityPub, we should:
- Defederate Tumblr if they inject ads into the federation for our users, and
- Defederate Tumblr if they place federated posts (our posts) alongside ads.
No ads on fedi.
