It's election day in the UK. The UK has odd rules about certain news hitting the media before the vote, so there's only yesterday's poll projection stuff to go on, even though many postal votes are in well ahead of time. The morning will be made up of old op eds, the last of the polls, and pointless shots of random buildings with signs saying " vote here" on them. The odd friendly dog etc. weather is ok so turnout should be good relative to politicians being oligarch stooges.
Americans may have a sense of that sort of thing, you know electoral colleges, and different states doing different stuff to prevent California dominating the politics of some dudes living in a population of 20 in the middle of a desert, except in Britain we mostly do all live pretty similar lives, finances notwithstanding, and can mostly hit each other with thrown rocks across most of the nation.
Foreign onlookers may be thrilled and astounded to learn that Britain's fptp system is broadly a fucked up mess of crucial seats to be won, and that voting in the UK has nothing to do with how many people vote for a party, we absolutely do not have proportional representation, which is why Nigel Farage can get lots of points on fuck all votes, the libdems can't get points on far more votes, and that even a grotesquely huge labour landslide could be gained from winning 35% of the vote.
My real hope for the election, other than devastation of Tory ranks is the greens gain more seats than expected, because they'll be the only party pushing left.
Starmers labour couldn't landslide without oligarch approval. So tbh the Tories will win the election, they'll just be called labour, the actual Tories, who are just criminals, will head back to the hedge fund mansions to influence events from afar.
I also hope Corbyn wins his seat. The other guy is an NHS predator.
Libdems will probably do ok, especially in the south where Labour conceded tactically so they're almost sure to come third. If they come second that'll shake the foundations, because that gives massive majority rule to centrists to a country that if we're honest is traditionally more conservative.
Tbh though, shift right is so prevalent, this could be considered consistency. A Tory voter of 1980 could vote modern labour without moving on the left/right scale at all.
This is not to say I concur with the exit polls entirely, only if Britain has really excelled itself in tactical voting this time round can they be true. Lots of conservatives vote autonomously, and most over the age of fifty will do that regardless of the sky being on fire. Starmer is a wildly unpopular and mistrusted leader of the labour party. This is about the youngun's and genz punishing Tories. Which they will.
So a landslide yes, but not a truly historic one. It'll be less extreme.
...and any private individual taking on that mindset, is simply a terrible shithead under almost all circumstances, likewise a quisling to his peers. For at the base level of humanity, it is an excuse to never think, to endlessly absolve oneself, and likewise be an ineffectual in the face of all the worlds threats. A dangerously selfish absence of the self. An attempt to carry disregard with honour, transparently tawdry, at best.
I think the thing you realise as you age, is that neoliberalism is the deployed excuse of the ineffectual in govt, a corrupted seat occupier, who has little intention of actions beyond pillage and securing their own personal advantage. It is a system designed to avoid recrimination for heinous acts antidemocratic and non-representational, committed while acting as a quisling for private interests within your own govt. Rentier, to war criminal.
Just hit another I'm really happy with. I'm having a good photography week this week. 😁 Composition, DOF and colour are in the happy place, the ant is a cherry on top and the little aphid hiding adds narrative. #bloomscrolling#macrophotography
...and gotta say. This is fucked. This is completely fucked. This is no way to live. A Victorian street urchin was more comfortable in their own skin. They've got you afraid to be in your own space and time, and fearful of the few who have the consciousness to do anything about it.
That's fucked. That's so fucking fucked. Lowering your eyes to buildings 🤣 trusting only the camera you can't ascertain the owner of, as if machine eyes did not serve some persona or greed. Bizarrely servile.
The corporations of the world hide in plain sight among vast industrial estates wanting to conduct business as if they don't exist, guarded by high viz rights violators. They want us to delete ourselves from our homes like crime scenes, people are afraid to be photographed in public as if they must never leave traces of living.
Ashamed to exist. Constant pretense of stealth, yet having none to big brother, only towards unmet friends, to individuals of expression. As a photographer I notice it.
Found a whole colony of red colembola springtails. I love these things. Only the size of half a pinhead each. This is very macro. All hand held, given myself the shakes 🤣 #macrophotography#springtails
