@icedquinn @moffintosh yeah, and they incurred debt that made us unable to build more for further immediate housing needs. You can only make shit buildings for so long until the costs of maintaining them come back to bite you in the ass. We keep having problems with them, we can't just tear them down and build better ones in their place so they're a constant shitty money sink for subpar living space.

@icedquinn @moffintosh don't worry, we run into issues with those buildings being constructed like shit, looking like shit and giving everyone living around them depression much faster than that.

@icedquinn @moffintosh also they were insulated like shit and with the money Poland spent around 1995-2015 to insulate them against cold so that they don't waste insane amounts of energy for heating we could've built another series of actually well constructed buildings.

@freemo I was actually thinking more about my surroundings and the people I got to know or heard about. It may vary between countries a lot. But tbh, if a crushing majority is "not normal" in a certain way, then whatever they are becomes "normal".

@freemo I'm not so sure about "overwhelming majority", these seem to be not that uncommon once you learn to recognise the symptoms. There is a problem with people assuming them, self-diagnosing and overall subconsciously Munchausening themselves for attention, yeah, but there's also a large pool of fairly high functioning adults who never got diagnosed when it was taboo and now are discovering it in a big wave as awareness spreads.

@icedquinn I think I count as people and I expect PID 1 to not just start stuff but also monitor it and make it available under a consistent API and consistent logs, so that I can use it to control the system instead of babysitting every single daemon their own way.
From what I can tell trying to muh unix philosophy to split it into different services that still do those things instead of falling back into bad ol' anarchy would just require a few different services that have the same basically infinite permissions and accomplish the same thing but with more bloat, attack surface and weird shit.
I guess if you prefer the anarchy disliking it makes sense tho.

@icedquinn if this level of unfathomably based requires systemd I'll happily accept systemd. Besides, I still haven't heard sensible arguments against it, only variations of "but it enforces a sensible API", "but it uses 5M of memory, that's way too much" or "but there's a bunch of related tools you can optionally also install so systemd itself is bloated :blobcatgoogly:"

@icedquinn skype probably deserved to be called a finely crafted desktop program those 15 years ago when it wasn’t yet bought by the likes of MS and enshittified, and didn’t yet have sensible competition. From what I remember about using it like 8 years ago it was already buggy and very annoying back then.

@freemo good analogy, since in the household despite everyone sharing things the "ruling class" of parents has 100% of the ruling and resource distributing power and if they are bad at it the children can do nothing but suffer.

@icedquinn honestly rossman does the same, one of his semi-recent videos was hard to watch for me since he repeats every point like 5 times at various portions of the video and actual deduplicated content could fit in ~4mins

On the topic of amazing instance administration, what was the anarchist-aligned instance the unencrypted database of which got seized by police from an admin’s home or something like that?

@icedquinn yeah but that’s the thing, browsers are hell and nobody wants to develop them, so everyone uses the ones that are already developed and actively worked on by someone else. If that stops being the case they’ll have no other way.

@icedquinn it’s worse than the Chrome thing, if Google decides to abandon Chrome, all the Chromium people can pick up the torch and develop it. Using Google’s index just means you’re screwed if anything ever happens to it.

@icedquinn at this point I’m ~80% sure the first libc to surpass glibc in adaptation will be something written in Rust or the like. That’d be nicely cursed.

@freemo for WM I’ve been using Plasma’s Wayland session for way over a year too, I adapted PipeWire early though and had no problems with screenshots or the like, only rare WM crashes and restarts. But these gradually stopped over updates and now I haven’t had a problem for months now, maybe even half a year.
The fact that SDDM still used X and so my system still autostarted it just to display the login manager which would then launch a wayland session was a bit annoying though. Especially since X would often refuse to shut down gracefully alongside the rest of the system and slowed down any reboots by the 1m30s of systemd being patient before shooting it in the head.

It seems that the switch of SDDM to wayland worked and I’m now finally writing this from a system with no native X server running anywhere, only XWayland inside of my Plasma session.
Nice.
