Long thread 4/n Course 3 (or 4 if whiskies were one): Cut vegetables and berries (ok tomatoes - these were so sweet!), radishes got a squeeze drizzle of sudachi; sliced warmed (store bought) apple smoked sausages, with a bit of mustard #Food#Cooking#Dinner#AptCooking#DasInKobe
Long thread/ 3/n Next up in the sequence was #whisky tasting. Started with the Suntory トリス (torisu or Torys) - then Akashi (English) whisky* last bit for our friend. A glencairn glass for him, while I tested this sake flared tulip tasting glass with more torisu. Torisu is real nice and smooth designed for highballs vanilla, touch of caramel. Next white horse with wisp of smoke from the laproaig that's supposedly in the blend. Partner just gets a torisu highball
Long thread 6/n #AptCooking#Dinner for a friend contd Next round of whisky - in this case #bourbon#tasting. Our friend had told us he liked iw Harper bourbon (which I find is readily available here in Japan). Had him try Beam, 4 roses (a high rye bourbon), and makers mark.
Long thread 7/n #DasInKobe#AptCooking With tastings done - more #Food Decided to follow up the bourbons with a quickly seared gently salted well marbled (an understatement for the kind you get here) #Japan#beef (A4 wagyu but not #Kobe ) (Hey if I bought it here in Kobe then it should be right?). Served with cooked sprouted soybeans (store bought) mixed with terrific Genovese pesto (also store bought). This was a great side - will miss getting these crunchy nutty soybeans #Cooking
Long thread 8/n After the rich beef and last of accompanying bourbon some down home #cooking#Kerala style ish #chicken#curry that partner made yesterday - coconut milk based and with chicken drummettes. Store (gyomu) bought parathas. Showed our Japanese friend and guest how to eat with fingers #AptCoooking#Food#Cooking
Long thread/ 10/n Time for #dessert or dessert #cocktail (I should say and not or perhaps) Makers Mark #OldFashioned served with a charred giant marshmallow (couldn't resist getting that for the kids when we saw it in the store). Also dark chocolate. Chocolate is the terrific Tony's - which I saw in the store (daiei aeon food style in #sannomiya) and promptly picked up. Looks like this is a new entrant to #Japan #Kobe#DasInKobe
Long thread/ 9/n #Cheese course Next a bit of cheese to wind down as things got cleared and washed and put away. Brie, some terrific cheddar and gruyere, mixed nuts (besides us) to accompany the cheese. Pardon the butter spreader - it was either that or the paring knife. We have some nice serving dishes and some plates and bowls but no cutlery really #Food#DasInKobe
Long thread/ 11/11 and ending here with final #dessert - also store bought (Kobe spices)v #GulabJamun I'm generally wary of store Indian desserts and sweets so tasted this earlier in the day and this Bikani brand (same as Samosa) was really good. Served gently warmed up to close out our #AptCooking#Dinner Couldn't resist serving it #wagashi style to go with the last of the oldfashioned #DasInKobe
What.A.Day! Great day at #Nagasaki Univ. Q&A after seminar went in for 40mins - maybe because you can encourage even college students to speak up if you offer stickers (hot tip, let the shy kids at the back who stay on, come & get stickers after anyway) Then a most fabulous shabu shabu dinner with Kagoshima pork (+ sake) in an amazing environ
Sorry no more details now - going to bed - I have to wake up for a 6am zoom panel (4pm US) 😳
No worries - up at 3 am then at 5:40 am before the 5:45am alarm. Good thing zoom call (and good meeting!) got over by 6:40 as it gave me plenty of time to deal with the deluge of email and to dos. Off now this morning to get some coffee and not that early of nearby attractions. #CarpeDiem
Oh ~gulp~ wow Quick couple of pics now (will AltText later) View of #Nagasaki from top of steps at #Suwa Temple and quick pano just inside main gate #DasInKyushu#Japan#Travel
