1. The military literally is an equal-opportunity employer. Literally.
2. If "not looking for diverse groups" you're looking based on race, so not merit.
3. Clear he has no clue how racist this sounds.

Everyone has noticed that, mister big brain. And, it isn't the left that has made the military (who we don't even like much) so worried about this. They want to be good at killing and winning wars. It's all they care about. And on their own they have realized that it's self-sabotage to continue to overlook large segments of the population.

Whatever some generals said about diversity that got him so upset there's zero chance he understood any of it. He just heard words like "diversity" and started freaking out.
Some republicans play the part, they still have racist ideas, but nothing this simple minded. But they might play it up for the base.
I think he's so dim this stuff really scared him. How could someone with so little experience have so much power?

Agee. I get the whole window-pushing overt racism thing but I don't think he's doing that. I think he really in his little shriveled heart, thinks that he was being oh so reasonable and since he can't understand what all these people he doesn't like and doesn't understand are going on about it must not really be important to anything he might care about... like having an effective military force.
He isn't curious, and I suspect learning is painful for him. He's dangerously incurious.

@futurebird agreed. But more worrisome is that certain Trump MAGA types, like Tuberville, want to stack the armed forces with Trump loyalists, so that when they pull some shit like Jan 6 but on a grander scale, they've got the armed forces in their pocket.

Seems to fit the Trumpist movement (and even many U.S. conservatives who revile Trump):
Part of core Trumpism is the idea that society (as pushed by The Left) has become polite or sensitive to a degree that's impractical, false, hypocritical & dangerous. That right-thinking people know in their hearts these impolite harsh "truths" are reality and no one should have to put up with others bullshit or self delusion.
Tuberville probably thinks he's just telling it like it is.
