I will never ever speak kindly of #Hive and will never recommend their products after my experience. Having been a first generation customer and having their equipment at the heart of my house, their extortion attempt was galling and egregious. They limited heating in my house to 15° and disabled access to my thermostat, meaning I couldn't adjust the temperatures. I live in a corner house and it got very cold very quickly. What they did should be illegal. How is it allowed? #HiveHome #BritishGas

I was nervous, having never done anything like that and asked some people for help. A professional electrician was disparaging of the brand of thermostat (but I feel they were just ignorant) and thus reluctant to get involved. But another came and helped me and we got it installed. Okay, he got it installed and I just watched. It's been a night, but I'm really happy with it. I no longer live in the frozen tundra! Happy days! Locally controlled smart technology is a wonderful thing!

Fortunately, I happened to read something on #Lemmy a few months ago and it recommended #Zigbee devices as well as looking into #HomeAssistant. So for the past few months I've been watching YouTube videos about the two and last week eventually bought a Zigbee thermostat to replace the #Hive thermostat. With my house being so cold and me being reluctant to get out of bed to even take my medication, it was now a matter of urgency to convert my #HiveHome to a Zigbee home.

Anyway, moral of the story… Fuck #Hive and their #HiveHome brand. They're greedy and morally corrupt. Which is even more annoying when you consider that their parent company is #BritishGas who are posting record profits.

Also if it's not obvious, #OpenProtocols over proprietary systems every time.

May #Zigbee, #ZWave, #Thread, #Matter and #HomeAssistant all enjoy a very long successful life.

#Duolingo as an app, is really fucking lazy. It's not hard to see if I've done a lesson or used my chests, so why are you spamming me with notifications about something I've already done? Whoever tells app developers that more is better is a shit head. I want intelligent notifications. At least if you want me back in the app, give me a real reason. Ugh!

#Firefox just had a massive quality of life bug patched.

If you use #FirefoxForAndroid and open links in private tabs by default, which everyone should really, a wonderful developer just landed a patch that adds a button to reopen the tab in your normal browsing session.

Such a seemingly small feature but a massive user experience improvement. Browsing on #Android just got a lot nicer. 🤩

That said, anyone that likes new shiny apps will know that there's something that never works out well for users and that's unified design between #Android and #iOS. While I understand that some management feel #mobile is mobile, they're two different platforms with different design conventions. You can always tell Android apps designed by iOS users and I would assume vice versa. It's the worst of both worlds. Anyway, #Mozilla decided one size fits all for #Firefox.

So I've just been looking at the new #Firefox design proposals and oh boy!

Firstly I will say that as a #FirefoxForAndroid user it's been obvious to the whole world and its mother that Firefox has needed a bit of an update for a while, so this is amazing news that everyone should get behind. #FirefoxAndroid has been my primary browser for a while. The mobile age huh!

But there's some interesting ideas going into #Firefox. They could've and should've probably been implemented in a platform specific manner but it is what it is. At least the app is being modernized and as such should become more lightweight. All in all, what's been proposed for #FirefoxForAndroid and #FirefoxForIOS is an improvement on what we have, but has massive room for improvement.

So everyone clamouring for #MaterialYou will have to clamour on, as there's none coming to #FirefoxForAndroid as of what I saw. Disclaimer, what I saw could be inaccurate or fake. But essentially #Firefox on #Android will be a browser that doesn't quite look or feel like an Android app. I'm honestly not sure what the point of that is. Every other app on people's phones will look and act one way except the #Mozilla one. Seems a silly idea to me and one that generally fails.

I wonder how many users will be turned away from having to learn new unintuitive user experiences though. No one is installing a #Mozilla app because it behaves in a specific way. Just how much weight does the maker of #Firefox have? Oh well, at least stuff is happening.

Just to add to this, I didn't see any tab grouping or tab stacking implementations in the proposal for #Firefox. That's not to say they're not being worked on, but don't get your hopes up.

But to talk about the design again, an estimated 70% of browser users are on #mobile. 70% of those using #Android and the majority of those using #Android13 with native #MaterialYou. I'm unsure why #Mozilla wouldn't design for them specifically a browser that looks and feels native and feels super fast.
