Using these notes again, at least some parts of them, to upgrade an older ASUS K53E laptop. It had a very slow hard disk drive, 4GB memory and on legacy boot. Upgraded to an SSD, 8GB memory and did the conversion to uefi boot (had to manually enter the UEFI boot path in the BIOS - \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\Bootmgfw.efi - to get it to boot).

The owner wanted to keep using it to "keep it out of the landfill". After the upgrades, it is still not a great laptop, but will be much better performance than it had before and will meet her needs.

I am getting a refurbished ThinkCentre Tiny M710q ready for a customer today.

She's switching from Windows 10 to Linux.

Will be installing Linux Mint Debian Edition, upgrading to an Intel i5-7500T (from an i3), upgrading to 16GB memory and 1TB Samsung nvme SSD.

Anybody using Zen Browser? If so, what do you like about it?

I am mostly using Brave these days (some Firefox with UblockOrigin).

I hope to have a lot more experience with that soon.

Wifi cards often will work, but not as many as under Linux. So desktop with ethernet should work great. Wifi... depends on the card but more and more are supported.

My goal is to get more experience with NetBSD and i3wm as a desktop system.

I haven't used OpenBSD much either, so can't give a good answer on how they compare.

I've been moving more towards AMD processors. Intel has had quite a few problems over the last few years. Part ownership by the government of USA likely won't make it better.

I have built quite a few custom desktop PCs for clients. For the last five years or so, I've mostly been going with AMD. I have been very happy with that.

Just sold a ThinkPad T14 (Gen 1) to someone who had been using a ThinKPad T510 I sold to her many years ago.

Successfully transferred Firefox and Thunderbird profile and data files from the T510 to the T14.

An unexpected surprise was that she really liked "Dark Mode"

    I do!

It is difficult to do full time and make enough, which is what I am doing. I've been in business for 15 years so I have a lot of repeat customers now.

I also started an email newsletter around 8 years ago. If I hadn't have done that, I probably would not have survived.

However, if you are wanting to do stuff for fun and profit on the side, it is different. I have some ideas that I could certainly talk over.

Depends on if you want to sell stuff or offer services.

    Agreed.

Our friends, who owned their house near where this guy lived sold and bought a different property about ten miles away, mainly to get farther away from him (other reasons, too, but that likely was the thing that motivated them to take action).

That may be a slight difference. The rural area I live in is fairly safe, but not completely.

Had a seemingly random violent act done by a white guy less than a mile from our home. Pretty serious, as he rushed into a home, grabbed a knife from the dinner table and attempted to attack the home owner.

He was out of jail within a month.

Agreed. The area I live in is about 97 percent white.

Still massively dysfunctional, unintelligent and unhealthy.

The main reason I am not a white supremacist is that the stupidest people I know who make the worst decisions are white.

I am sure people of other races also make equally dumb decisions (or worse, if you think whites are inherently better)... but "my race makes slightly less terrible decisions that your race" isn't a great foundation.

If you do not like what a company is doing... don't continue buying products and services from them.

Use your money (life force) to support what you want more of and stop the flow of resources to what you see as being harmful.
