Having trouble completing your most important tasks?

Break your big, overwhelming tasks down into smaller, more manageable pieces.

Then, seal each of the pieces in a small lead-lined chest. Bury them in separate locations. Tell no one what you've done.

Here’s the thing about the “Invisible Hand”:

Regulators didn’t put microplastics in your water.

The nanny state didn’t lie to you about whether tobacco products caused cancer.

Socialism didn’t decide to take a third of your paycheck for health insurance coverage, and then still do everything in its power to deny your claims for lifesaving care.

Capitalists pursuing their self-interest did all of that, and more.

You've probably seen posts joking about programming errors making things go sideways on 2/29—this is not just a joke. Microsoft To Do scans task titles for clues to due dates and reminder times. This is what happened when I dated a task for today.

Interviewer: It looks like your previous job only lasted three months. Can you share why you left?

Me: Sure! All new employers are subject to a 90-day probationary period, during which they are evaluated to make sure they are a good fit with my personal culture and can perform their duties satisfactorily. Not all companies make it.

@polotek So much pushback about quote-posts seems to come from folks who can’t fathom a non-dunking-on use case, but you’ve outlined a perfect one here.

    My big two are:

    1. I have something to say, but I don’t want anyone to see my comment without the context of what I’m responding to, or

    2. I want to share something, but in the spirit of “retweets aren’t endorsements,” I don’t want anyone to see that I shared it without the context of my comment.

Quote-boosts do this. Nothing else does.

If the only place you share thirty seconds of how-to information is in a sixteen-minute video, do you actually know how to do it?

    I say no.

If this seems harsh, think of it this way: it’s not so much that I want these creators to be harmed, as I want them to no longer be incentivized to ruin my experience and obfuscate the information I need.

And if that’s still too harsh? Tough shit. They started it.

My sincere wish for the new year is that everyone who makes how-to videos instead of writing concise articles gets demonetized.

Google wants to make it harder to block ads. Thought experiment:

If, instead of ad blocking per se, we used browser extensions that blocked all tracking, prevented execution of arbitrary code, and made fingerprinting devices impossible, but also left all ad content visible, would Google (and the rest of their industry) still be opposed?

The answer tells you everything you need to know about why it is moral and ethical to use ad blockers.

@msbellows Neither I nor the OP said anything about tolerating bad actors or bad behavior. I like what she said because it calls attention to Fediverse partisans’ obliviousness to the tradeoffs in the designs of this place—like how people talk about defederation like it's a clean, simple, pure solution, as though it has no negative consequences.

(EDIT: The first version of this reply started out unnecessarily aggressive, so I took it out, and I apologize. The rest I stand by.)
