@futurebird I am pretty sure we are experiencing the beginning of the end of the Industrial Age, and its downfall will be horrible. No divine power will come to save us. We need to build the foundations of a new society while there's still some time left, before everything becomes too chaotic.

@dalias @slothrop AI is just a research field of computer science, the part where we try to solve complex problems for which humans need their intelligence with computers. There has been a lot of progress in a small part of AI research lately, Machine Learning (ML), not because of any fundamentally new breakthroughs but because computers are finally powerful and available data collections finally big enough. All those huge proprietary models are quite impressive but actually not that useful, but there are much smaller, often more specialised, open source AI projects that anybody can run on a big PC or workstation at home or in the office without the need for a computing centre. Even AI training doesn't necessarily need a big computing centre, it's possible to use systems like BOINC instead where anybody who's interested in seeing a certain open source AI model finished could just donate CPU and GPU cycles, running a tiny part of the training process on their own computer.

@dalias @slothrop The problem is not AI but who owns it. I think intellectual property is an abomination anyway, everything immaterial that can be infinitely copied at marginal cost needs to be free for everybody to use, copy, and distribute however they like. All the nonconfidential data should be in the public domain, freely available, all software should be free and open source, all designs for all material goods should be in the public domain so anybody can build a copy of anything without having to obtain a license. In fact, private property should not exist, everything should belong to everybody, no rich or poor people anymore, no countries or borders, just a planet of eight billion equals. The very idea that anybody can own anything they can't carry around in a bag needs to die. The very Earth on which we live doesn't belong to any of us, we belong to her, we're part of her, just like all the other organisms since the very first cell.
The invention of property in the late Stone Age was a step in the wrong direction. Intellectual property is where it all becomes completely absurd, how can you own anything that anybody can copy? The current AI hype is just a bunch of techbros trying to seize all the I.P. and make it theirs forever in order to become the Cyberlords of Technofeudalism since the end of Capitalism is already on the horizon. Using their own laws to defend the I.P. of citizens against the corporations is not going to work since I.P. has always been a tool of the capitalists. Instead, we need to dismantle even physical property, nobody gets to own anything but a few personal possessions, everything else belongs to everybody, we need to restore the commons, abandon forced competition, and create cultures of cooperation and sharing where everything is free, both free as in speech and free as in beer, where money or markets don't rule our lives anymore.
There aren't any moderate futures left, the only futures still open to us are radical.

@Uair @Pistolenkind You wouldn't believe what we could see on TV in Europe in the 1980s to 2000s, especially French, Italian, and German channels. We had amateur striptease shows like Tutti Frutti. We had uncensored erotic movies on TV, just no hardcore porn (which basically meant no genital close-ups, no erect penises, no visible penetration, there was a lot of 1970s softcore porn that ran completely uncensored). After 2200h, a lot becomes possible on TV, and after midnight, things get really wild.
Of course, we had a lot of gratuitous nudity in advertising back then. There were ads with nude women hugging computer hardware in IT magazines.
In teen drama series, you could see a pretty young actress topless at teatime every once in a while. If it was just a (not too big) pair of tits, and if it didn't remain on screen for more than a minute or so, it was perfectly fine. I don't know how it is now because I basically stopped watching TV on a regular basis around 2008.
I also remember newspapers having the same arguments over and over the day after every nude scene on afternoon or early evening TV. And every time a fictional criminal investigator used some dirty word. Must we expose our children to all this nudity, and can we allow a police officer to use foul language on TV? However, advertising was just advertising, and sex sells, so you basically only read anything critical about them in EMMA and other feminist zines.

@bagder This is what happens when there is competition where there should be cooperation. AI research and development could be, _should_ be a collaborative project, not owned by anybody and open to everybody, but instead it's a bunch of corporations trying to outrun each other.
The Tragedy of the Commons only exists when there is competition instead of cooperation. Competition is how we ruin everything by trying to grab it all before anybody else does. Cooperation is how we can give everybody whatever they need for free and still have enough for all of us.
Why train so many machine learning models that aren't all that different, which are owned and run by private enterprises, when we could instead train much fewer models that aren't owned by anybody and can be used for free?

@sun @Nimbius666 Not going to happen. Space will remain a resource sink for many decades if not centuries before we can turn it into a source. We probably haven't got many decades left, maybe one or two decades if we're really lucky, before things start falling apart rapidly.
Space is just a distraction.

A much smaller human population might still survive the collapse, but with a much less stable, ecologically impoverished Earth, civilisation is likely to become utterly impossible for tens of thousands of years, reducing humanity to a bunch of small nomadic post-collapse tribes.

@Nimbius666 Capitalism is already collapsing because the global economy has hit the growth limits. It won't be able to grow any further, it won't even stay the same size, it will shrink significantly, probably causing the entire Capitalist world economy to collapse. And the billionaires who understand this are planning on becoming the feudal lords of the neofeudal age which they hope will come after the collapse.
