is it normal that videos just don't play on mastodon anymore? I can download them and play them from disk, but in the web player just doesn't do anything.

i thought it might have been a cross-server thing, but they don't play from the original server, either.

i don't think my setup is super unusual. i'm on Firefox with fairly "strict" privacy policies, and i got EME disabled, because duh.

okay, i think it's a codec problem actually. apparetly i can't play H.264 video except in Haruna (not sure what that's about).

meanwhile AV1 is supported by non-Apple browsers for *checks watch* over 6 years. or you know, even Apple supports WebM since a few years.

but why should the all hip and open-sourcey Mastodon prefer proper media standards when there's also codecs by the MPEG mafia?

it's worse than i expected, btw. MP4/H.254/H.265 videos are all i can get from many open-sourcey social media sites, including #Mastodon, #PeerTube, #Invidious.

(some may offer their instance-owners to change the default media format, but i have not encountered such an instance)

it sucks. when did everyone start believing that relying patented codecs was okay?

and you *can* just offer both, if you cant live without supporting old apple devices or whatever.

@lain @grillchen @eal i think the point is not that advertising can't contain useful information, but that its main purpose isn't to make you well-informed.

just as ads _can_ be entertaining or aesthetically pleasing, they can also succeed without doing any of these things.

just compare it so something you would deliberately seek out for these purposes, perhaps something you yourself would pay for. i suspect you you would expect something much better than the average ad.

pet peeve: "good intentions".

if the intentions consistently cause bad things, then they just aren't very good. yeah, it's based on bad reasoning/understanding. it always is, that's how evil happens.

how else are these intentions supposed to be "good"? by making people feel good about themselves?

even people who think they "do evil on purpose" are just semantically confused. they still act according to their own values. though their confusion probably doesn't help with having good ones.

ContraPoints' conspiracy video how conspiracy theories are an outgroth of authoritarian thinking. for an antiauthoritarian, it's often pretty straighforward to look at social dysfunction and see power relations that seem to cause it. but an authoritarian can't do that, they by-and-large drank the kool-aid of government legitimacy. for them, the power itself can't be the problem. the problem must be _who_ is in power.
