@eal @grillchen @sofia i can't see this as true. there's plenty of cases where i was quite happy about learning of something i'm interested in, where i didn't know it existed before.

@sofia @grillchen @eal still, so what? Most of my daily interactions with other people are not based on making me well informed. And with ads, the motivation is as clear as can be.

@lain @grillchen @eal i think the point is not that advertising can't contain useful information, but that its main purpose isn't to make you well-informed.

just as ads _can_ be entertaining or aesthetically pleasing, they can also succeed without doing any of these things.

just compare it so something you would deliberately seek out for these purposes, perhaps something you yourself would pay for. i suspect you you would expect something much better than the average ad.

@lain @grillchen @sofia Yeah, for me it's mostly that I want to avoid interactions where the primary motivation is to manipulate/propagandize/lie to me
in normal-people-interactions the setup is not like this, it's neither based on making each other well informed nor is it making maximum transactional profit out of the other party

(not even trying to convince you, if you find that kind of messaging useful, good for you -- I think we have almost opposite experiences on this)
