@mentallyalex@helplessduck@UnFitz2@TazPoltorak The best way to explain it I've found is like this: You know how apples are red, right? Even though many particular apples aren't actually red, might be green or yellow or some kind of mix, the "apple" concept is (for most people) kind of associated with "redness" in our mental model. It's that, but instead of the concept of "apple", it's the concept of "the number 3" or "the letter C" or whatever.
@mentallyalex@helplessduck@UnFitz2@TazPoltorak So it's not like you literally hallucinate the color red whenever you see or think about an apple, but "apples are red" is just a feature of that particular concept that kind of rides along with it. Well, "3" is also red. ?
@mentallyalex@helplessduck@UnFitz2@TazPoltorak (This isn't the sort of synesthesia that I personally have, at least not in a very strong way, and everyone is different of course. I have the sensory-wires-crossing hallucinating trippy patterns whenever there's a sharp unexpected noise, which imo is different enough that it should really have a different name, but I've heard the neurological mechanisms are similar.)
@mentallyalex@helplessduck@UnFitz2@TazPoltorak You assume correctly (I'm the npm guy), and yes, that's a good way of looking at it. -- Edit: Er, actually, wait, no. "3" isn't associated with "apple", they just both have a reference to the "red" tag. (Maybe that's what you meant?)
@mentallyalex@helplessduck@UnFitz2@TazPoltorak And really, idk why I picked "3" and "red" when 3 is obviously orange (5 is red), so maybe I have more of that sort of synesthesia than I recognize?
@mentallyalex@helplessduck@UnFitz2@TazPoltorak I'm also somewhat aphantasiac, which maybe is why I don't "see" the color, and just sort of feel the association? I also don't usually think in words (unless I'm writing words), it's more like a proprioceptive sense, like the object graph of a system is a limb or something I can't see, but can sense in space. Putting this stuff into words is so trippy and difficult lol
@Pineywoozle@mentallyalex@helplessduck@UnFitz2@TazPoltorak Yeah, same, not at all. I had gotten confused/concerned looks from people when I tried to relate with them about those weird shapes and colors that happen when there's a sudden noise, and was super excited to learn about synesthesia when I was 12. But aphantasia, I always just thought "picturing" something in your mind was understood to be a metaphor, until @seldo told me about all the wild stuff he sees while programming.
@vaurora in your defense, it's buried and subtle af. I only caught this on the second or third reading ? By that time, I'd read enough of leckie's other stuff to know that anything that seems significant probably is, so I took notes. Breq was not chosen at random. JoT *wanted* its most badass self to go get vengeance.
Sad fact that occurred to me this morning: if ever there is a high-budget long-form screen adaptation of the Imperial Radch trilogy (eg, a 3- or 6-season netflix or HBO series), and it sticks 100% true to the character descriptions in the books as written, reactionaries will pitch a fit about "woke" revisionism because characters explicitly written as having dark skin will be played by black actors. (To say nothing of male actors using "she" pronouns, zomg.)
Also, maybe if it was a hit, we'd get a prequel series to tell the story of the galaxy class badass who kicked so much Radchai ass that one of their victims was beatified after being beheaded, before ultimately being ancilliaried as Justice of Toren 1 Esq 19 when their planet was annexed.
(Watch the icon Breq holds dear, goes back for when the ship is blowing up. THAT'S FUCKING BREQ. "It's a Radchai saint". "She looks just like you." "No, the saint is the other one, the one getting beheaded.")
I know it's a bad idea to stan politicians. I know anyone who gets anywhere close to the presidency is probably a terrible power hungry monster. I know this. And yet, Elizabeth Warren is just so damn inspiring, relentlessly doing the work to keep moving our country in a better direction, from whatever vantage point she can reach. She's fucking heroic, we are all so lucky to have her working for us. (This post does not contain a question.) https://masto.ai/@perrybacon/109598242185526382
you know. isaacs. from the internet. also oakland. I made npm and a bunch of the other JavaScript you probably use. I'm not new here. Please assume I know something about oss and social media. I've been doing this for 20 years, and have been on mastodon since 2017. (Moved account in 2022.) Curious ignorance welcome. Willful ignorance will be regarded as harassment and blocked accordingly. #ActuallyAutistic, I try to speak precisely and mean exactly what I say except when I'm joking.
