It’s fascinating, really—a subtle analogy for the two Koreas, possibly hinting at peace through integration. What if Eunho and HAEri’s "unification" is symbolic, a blend of identities showing a path to unity and coexistence?

2024-10-29: I hope they'll keep Ji Yeeun. There never was a single Running Man episode that I got bored with since she joined. I love the character she's role-playing too and how she's acting it, it reminds me of my school years, especially Grade 9 and Grade 10. The good ol' days when we're all teenagers falling in love and teasing each other. Keep it up Yeeun, you revived Running Man!

I've talked a lot about Philippine English, and gave a few examples. Here's another example, but before that some context.

Philippine English is a real and recognized variant of English in the same level as American, Australian, and British English. In fact, it is a combination of those 3 variants with influences from the 200+ Philippine languages and dialects.

It is not:
1. Taglish / Englog (it's code-mixing not a language)
2. Singlish (although it is being discussed to recognize as an English variant on its own right)
3. Kinglish / Konglish (it is actually a subset of the Korean language)

Now, for the latest example.

As mentioned previously, in Philippine English, all spellings are valid. You can mix British, Australian, and American spellings in a single sentence, and it's fine.

That meant words like "color" and "colour" (both are common) mean the same thing. Or, "organisation" and "organization" (we use the latter more).

But there are some that took a life on its own. In a previous post, I mentioned how we use "center" vs "centre". Today, let's talk about "theatre" vs "theater".

When we write "theatre", we generally refer to stage plays in a theater. And a "theater" generally refers to the building/place where you watch something, like a theatre play or a movie.

It's easier to follow than "center" vs "centre", right?

* Theatre: a stage play; stage acting
* Theater: the building/place where you watch something

How about the pronunciation? The same. 😁 Although you'll probably randomly hear some say it as "thea-tre" instead of "thea-ter". It was influenced by the Spanish/Filipino word "teatro". It's not common, but you might hear it.

These two different usage of the two spellings is older than I am. By the time I was born (1982) it already is that way.

@olena @KatyElphinstone True! If something cultural and generally for relatives or close friends is done by or to a foreigner, it feels awkward. Mentally, it's understandable why and it's appreciated, but still, we only do it because it's our culture and/or relatives or close friends.

It's like kissing on the lips. I read before there's a culture where it is a form of greeting. They don't do it to foreigners, that would create all sorts of misunderstanding. And awkward if a foreigner do it even if it's understandable they want to experience the culture (and become a citizen later). 😅

@KatyElphinstone Yep! It's more draining if a drama ensues just because we refused 😅 or to explain it. It's like, "okay, fine, just this once for greetings" and "you owe me later" LOL.

But, again for me, if it's strangers, nope. 🤣Also, in our culture, beso beso is generally for relatives or very close friends. It's awkward to do it with strangers. Although, from what I've read/heard, it is the custom in other countries, family or strangers. If I visit other countries, maybe it can be an exemption (and I'm genuinely curious about other cultures and what's it like).

(NOTE: This is about Kim Taeri. The below is not about the entire cast, who themselves are doing great in their respective theatre scenes. There are also a few who started in theatre acting or have theatre skills learned later. One of which was Taeri's real-life friend who, from what I've read, also started in theatre.)

Kim Taeri (김태리) as lead in ”Jeongnyeon" ("정년이") was no doubt intentional, we can go as far as to say this was written with her in mind. Theatre is her turf after all.

Theatre actors are actually the best screen actors too. It's why those who started on-screen are advised to go into theatre acting so they can hone their skills and learn the secrets in acting.

In the West, Sir Patrick Stewart—known for the roles Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Professor Charles Xavier—started as a theatre actor. His American counterparts in Star Trek: The Next Generation often shared how he changed the show and how they learned acting from him (they're already established actors).

It's why Kim Taeri is so good herself.

Even though her theatre scenes in this show were scripted, you can actually see her threatre acting in full display. I wouldn't be surprise if all they did was roll the camera continuously, and let everything happen naturally. 🙃🙂 The editing director probably had an easy time as well for the Kim Taeri theatre scenes.

Whenever it's Kim Taeri's theatre scenes, it is as if we're watching a fan camera of a real live theatre play. You can see the difference in her acting, theatre vs on-screen. Kim Taeri is being full-on theatre actor mode when she's in a theatre scene. On-sceen mode when in everything else. Truly a legend. No, a goddess.

Unless it's expected, like a relative who went came from abroad after so many years, I learned to expect them to bring the culture from abroad, like hugging for greetings, or the cheek / fake kiss (we call it in Filipino as "beso-beso", you touch your cheeks on theirs both sides while saying "muah" 🤷🏽), and just to avoid family/clan drama 😅

One of the most common one is, "it's not faithful to the books!" Since they already know it, I don't understand why they watched the following seasons. (And there will always be changes in an adaptation too, from little to big, few to a lot.)

It's just weird.
