Every time I opened "Hegel contra sociology" by Gillian Rose, it struck me as dynamite, yet I don't think I understand nearly half of it. This podcast episode helped a lot to explain what's the matter with all these neo-Kantianisms that she wants us to overcome. It was also quite funny and made me laugh!

@peterlevine Well, the secret ballot always have the same numerical value of "1 vote", while a donation, even through some clearinghouse, can have any value. That makes the monetary donation able to convey more information about the sender. Hard to see this hypothetical system as guarantying anonymity.

@adoranten i do think the biophysical approach is more relevant than the monetary. However, I'm not sure if energy use can be used as a proxy for being "well off" as that would assume some kind of 100 % energy efficiency (the latter defined in a strictly anthropocentric manner).

Historian Ian Morris claimed that hunters-gatherers lived by 1,10 US dollars per day. What the fuck does that supposed to mean? He was sharply criticized by Graeber/Wengrow in The Dawn of Everything. Now Morris has reviewed the same book in American Journal of Archaeology, and defends himself by saying he simply uses "the commonest metric in the social sciences". However he still has a lot of praise for The Dawn of Everything.

Indeed you can buy plays with credit card, but in that case the money would have to be on a bank account i.e. already laundered.

Spotify used for large-scale money-laundering by criminal gangs in Sweden. Not really news, but today Swedish newspaper SvD presents the first real investigation of the matter. Cash is used to buy bitcoin, which is used to buy #Spotify streams from botfarms, boosting rappers associated with the gangs who can then receive legal royalty payments.

Quite illustrative for the financialization of music more generally.

To close that random tangent and loop back to the initial (weak) point: while there is way too much reactionary current under the ongoing schadenfreude wave, #BurningMan has turned into enough of a privileged white tech-bro playground that it's perfectly fine not feeling too bad for burners forced to wade in the mud, survive on cereal bars, and piss in a bucket for a couple days… If anything, that's what this thing was all about in the first place. 🙃
