"Rock (i.e., the music made by straight white guys with largely modernist aesthetics) used to be so synonymous with the vanguard of the music industry that the industry’s main historical institution is called The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but the genre has lost its edge both commercially and critically, as fans and music writers have turned towards other styles. /.../ So, if both traditional gender and race binaries and the rock/pop hierarchy all rely on the same conceptual architecture as the classically liberal public/private distinction, it’s no surprise they both collapse once fifty years of neoliberalization in politics and culture have increasingly eliminated anything resembling “the public” and reduced everything to private markets, private responsibility, personalized algorithmic feeds, and so on. /.../ One thing that is clear to me is that any alternative to the resilience/agrievement opposition will not be found in a particular style or genre, but in an orientation toward private property. It will be a public vibe, a collective vibe, one where the responsibility for producing art and reproducing life are mutually shared and distributed." https://itsherfactory.substack.com/p/from-the-gendered-poprock-binary
@peterlevine Well, the secret ballot always have the same numerical value of "1 vote", while a donation, even through some clearinghouse, can have any value. That makes the monetary donation able to convey more information about the sender. Hard to see this hypothetical system as guarantying anonymity.

@adoranten i do think the biophysical approach is more relevant than the monetary. However, I'm not sure if energy use can be used as a proxy for being "well off" as that would assume some kind of 100 % energy efficiency (the latter defined in a strictly anthropocentric manner).
Historian Ian Morris claimed that hunters-gatherers lived by 1,10 US dollars per day. What the fuck does that supposed to mean? He was sharply criticized by Graeber/Wengrow in The Dawn of Everything. Now Morris has reviewed the same book in American Journal of Archaeology, and defends himself by saying he simply uses "the commonest metric in the social sciences". However he still has a lot of praise for The Dawn of Everything. https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/full/10.1086/720603
"For prevention of unsatisfiable desires — 1. Separation at meal times, as between those who have the homeliest fare, and those, who in consideration of habit or infirmity, are indulged with choicer fare. (See Ch. vi. Diet.) 2. Separation as between sex and sex, from the commencement of a certain age. 3. Separation of the indigenous and quasi-indigenous stock of the non-adult class, from the coming-and-going stock, who might excite hankerings after emancipation, by flattering pictures of the world at large." – Jeremy Bentham 1812
Jeremy Bentham's 1812 paper "Pauper management improved: particularly by means of an application of the Panopticon principle of construction" is something extra even by Benthamian standards. I mean it is so hard not to use the anarchronistic label of "fascism".
@dinsvenskicyberrymden The example I mentioned here was the procedure told by ONE gang member. Saying that you can buy plays in other ways is not "fact checking", dear friend. Indeed you can buy plays with credit card, but in that case the money would have to be on a bank account i.e. already laundered.
Spotify used for large-scale money-laundering by criminal gangs in Sweden. Not really news, but today Swedish newspaper SvD presents the first real investigation of the matter. Cash is used to buy bitcoin, which is used to buy #Spotify streams from botfarms, boosting rappers associated with the gangs who can then receive legal royalty payments.
To close that random tangent and loop back to the initial (weak) point: while there is way too much reactionary current under the ongoing schadenfreude wave, #BurningMan has turned into enough of a privileged white tech-bro playground that it's perfectly fine not feeling too bad for burners forced to wade in the mud, survive on cereal bars, and piss in a bucket for a couple days… If anything, that's what this thing was all about in the first place. 🙃 5/5 [bonus extra thread below]
“Burning Man attracts the elite of the elites to party and pretend they’re in a classless, moneyless society,” said Tommy Diacono, co-founder of Rave Revolution. “But more private jets than ever are flying to the Burn. We’re burning propane for fun. The air-conditioned domes are getting bigger every year.” https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2023/aug/28/burning-man-protest-climate-change-environment
