Oh, ooohhhh... this is a very interesting move. I approve! There will no doubt be wobbles as this transition goes ahead, but in general, moving ownership, and by extension, mgmt/governance, into a public, NFP realm is excellent.

This is a leverage point, this is how you shift a system, even one as big as an old elephant.

Honest question, since I'm in Canada and I know about this much -->.<-- about non-profit boards here - can the Board of this org end up with their hands in the developers' work?

Seeing there's a lot of anxiety over who some of these people are, and and immediate leap to "therefore, enshittification ensues ..." in the platform itself.

But an NFP Board (Canadian) is primarily concerned with its fundraising and budgeting, and advising the CEO - not directing projects. Same here?

A NEW and unrelated US Charitable foundation has been formed to fundraise for and support Mastodon GmbH FROM the US, which just allows US'ians to get a tax slip for their support.

I don't think it can actually touch the product or its currently-two-almost-three developers?

You can make some substitutions here, using any corporate/commercial monolithic site for “Twitter” and pointing out that “Mastodon” is not the network or the Fediverse, just one of many interconnecting applications available. Depends on how complicated you want to get or where your contact has their base of familiarity.

Current interest: “Socializing Fedizens”. How do we elevate the discourse, with policy, practice or tools, and limit the NEED for moderator activity in online conversation?

There is a book - series, actually, fiction - that started in I think the late 80’s, I read it in the 90’s, and it NAILED the rise of personal-pocket-communication AND the resulting social media hellscape we now have. A couple years before TB-L figured out a hyperlink.

I find reviewing these prescient things fascinating, if a little depressing.

I really wish this account were in the Fediverse, but I suppose their work is needed in the Metaverse and Xittyverse as much or more.
