the Democrats have had eight (8) years to prepare for this debate and they are still unable to come up with a coherent response to "what if Donald Trump simply lied"
ME: Hello computer! Please show me what I was doing recently
COMPUTER IN THE 1980's: l cease to exist when I am powered off. Please start whatever you were doing from scratch
COMPUTER IN THE 2000's: Yep here you go champ
COMPUTER IN THE 2020's: I stored 10,000 identical copies of what you were doing in 500 different global datacentres at a carbon footprint equivalent to leaving a semi-trailer idling 24/7 and also sent a copy to the FBI just to be safe. Let me know which one you want and I'll do my best to figure it out. By the way here are 10 things which are similar to what you were doing and 9 of them are ads. Do you like this? Please select "I love this very much" or "I'll be in love with this later" to continue
A non-exhaustive list of deliberately malevolent UI/UX decisions which drive me absolutely batty and yet we all have to live with every day because of the invisible hand of the attention economy
- Re-ordering an interface based on what a mysterious algorithm I cannot see thinks I want to use/see so that if you rely on muscle memory, or if there's any device lag whatsoever, you press the wrong button (get fucked, Spotify)
- Re-loading all of my content as soon as I change focus or re-open the app, even if only mere seconds have passed (Instagram, Reddit, basically everyone) and making it impossible to find something again
- Removing an option to say "never ask me this again" and instead having "Not now" (would you like to set Edge as your default browser? would you? hm?)
- "See less often" or "Show me less of this" rather than "I don't want to see this"
- Promoting a new feature with a popup that can only be "dismissed" by saying "Show me more" or "Take me there" etc
the only thing you need to do to understand how imperialism works is to understand this: anyone who does anything in support of Palestine is 'rewarding terrorism', but anyone who does anything in support of Israel is 'respecting law and order' - even though you can quite literally read a history book and see that Israel was established through unbelievable, industrial-scale, violent terrorism. every time I see this argument come up I lose my fucking mind
We said goodbye to our 14 year old dog Rosie last week. I have written about how wonderful and sweet she was, and also of loss, and sadness. You can read it, if you like https://notsounwashed.com/2024/05/rosie/
"we were previously wasting shit-tons of energy blasting cold air into the world, but money is no longer free so we've re-discovered 'fridges with doors on them'. hopefully this big sign reduces the amount of sheer bafflement you experience at having to open a door"
Just catching up this morning that he spent a bunch of time DMing trans women who left comments on his various meltdown posts to continue arguments with them. Silicon Valley CEOs simply cannot stand to be thought of as incompetent or bad in any way, it destroys them as people
I haven't seen a public meltdown from a Silicon Valley Bro like this in honestly such a long time. He must have fired his PR handlers or is just letting their frantic calls go to voicemail
I just read something from a former employee that apparently he's meant to be on sabbatical right now as well which means a bunch of poor saps are going to wake up tomorrow morning to the world's biggest dumpster fire in their inboxes as they trudge out to clean up the CEO's mess
Tumblr's moderators falsely flagged a trans woman's completely clothed and non-sexual pre- and post-transition photos as 'explicit content' and refused to rescind the ban, so she posted that she hopes the CEO "dies a painful death involving a car covered in hammers that explodes multiple times and the hammers go everywhere". The CEO of Tumblr is currently having a very public and extended meltdown about this, and is claiming that the Wile E. Coyote ass scenario of CEO Car Hammer Explosion was a "credible death threat" which required the intervention of the FBI and has banned the woman in question. He has spent the last few hours being Definitely Not Mad Online in all of the comments and replies. Truly incredible next levels of Silicon Valley Bro brain
I love my smart TV. I love the way it takes a long time to boot up because it's trying to refresh the advertisements on the home screen. I delight in the way it randomly restarts because it's downloaded an update without asking me, each of which makes the TV slower and slower with every subsequent install. I adore the way it buries the apps that I want to use, and that I use without fail every single time, below the apps that it's being paid to promote and which I have never touched in my life and would never use without the cold metal of a glock pressed hard against my sweating temple. I am infinitely thrilled by the way the interface lags constantly, due to the need to have one thousand unnecessary animations rendered on hardware ripped wholesale from a ten year old phone. I feel myself borne aloft on wings of pure joy when I am notified that my data will be collected and analysed to determine my useage patterns. Even now I am writing this from a field of beautiful flowers and soft luscious grass as I lie and look up happily at the bright blue sky, smiling happily to know that this is the future of technology
