#Zelensky is an amazingly canny operator and without him I can't see how #Ukraine would have got this far.

His strategy is always to isolate #Putin as much as possible while trying his best not to alieniate his piss poor allies, whether Biden, EU or Trump.

I am in awe at his powerful diplomacy while watching his countrymen die in unnecessarily large numbers because we (collectively) prevaricate and fumble from a safe distance.

I was young when Nixon was pardoned but even then I recognised it as corruption, blatant corruption at the level of the powerful, and never to trust that those with power will see the world the way I had been taught to.

@Gargron Please can we have a way to turn off the overlays (Alt etc) on images.

On mobile they always get in the way of reading textual images and are extremely annoying.

Also on mobile the new notifications layout is good but for some reason clicking on the (double) tick now, to clear them, hardly ever works. (Brave on Android.)

@pfefferle Curious I read @davew's post and don't understand what it is he's longing for or why as a programmer he hasn't built it. Not criticising, especially as thinking about it lead me to realise I need to check my assumptions about this area and the work I've been doing and supporting in this space for a decade.

The hole in your argument is, "if it was legally obtained" and the point of software licenses is to both restrict the distribution and allowed use of those distributed copies.

If you breach the the terms you have not obtained the copy under the applicable law.

Are you saying that holding a copy of object code means you are permitted to use it without paying the copyright holder?

I'm guessing you're not a lawyer.

I'm not either but I know that software licensing is very much about permission to use / run the code. That's why people buy licenses even if they have a copy of the code. Having source code and being able to compile it doesn't change that.

@mgorny I made this choice a while back for similar reasons, but now am also considering the anti-capitalist software license.

What do you think about that?

Something as contentious as seeing Threads content should be by consent, which means opt-in not opt-out blocking which is hard to find in the web UI. I tried more than once in the past and gave up, so this move by de facto forces users to see content controlled by the corporation that was for many the reason they built or came to the fediverse to get away from.

Federating with #Meta / #Threads is a travesty and will severely damage what the #fedi stands for.

There are also unknown costs from deskilling individuals and loss of expertise which AI will not have - because humans don't just learn how to do what the AI takes over from them. The learning and understanding that lead to their skills goes much wider and deeper.

And once the commons has stopped evolving, current so called AI (LLMs) will stagnate, because humans will contribute less innovation add LLMs do not innovate.

I expect dire long term consequences from chasing short term goals

When I polled about blocking commercial instances, when Medium joined, I was heartened to see much support but I'm afraid they aren't being heard, or even asked. I'm on three instances, none have polled.
