@darnell The Matrix.org Foundation is a nonprofit built to steward an open source specification and nurture the ecosystem around it.

There is no precedent for FOSS foundations like ours getting into managed hosting or other service-oriented lines of business. There is, however, precedent for channeling public funds into common resources, including open source.

@thanius @element Great question! Pleased to say there will be no impacts for users on the Matrix.org homeserver.

Following up on last month's news about Synapse and Dendrite, @element has begun implementing its planned forks, starting with Synapse.

The Foundation is pleased to see that, not only do the forked projects remain under an open source license, but Element binds itself, through the CLA, to keeping 3rd party contributions in the open source commons.
