They know very well it doesn't need to be but it's what appeals to the dumb masses (and thus sells well) so they will add it.
If it also means they can more easily add planned obsolescence? Even better!

- Google tracks you then sells your data but at least they are pretty upfront about it and it (generally) doesn't cost you anything except your privacy.
- Apple tracks you, says your data is safe and blablabla... But then they also use that data to sell you ads n stuff... And you payed a few hundred to a few thousand euro's to allow them to do so btw.

So idk which one is worse... You trading privacy for software *or* you paying for your privacy to get invaded. :stallman_thaenkin:

@selea OpenWRT will probably be the default but I have heard he also has been fiddling around with VyOS.

Tho given that it's an NXP LS1046A SoC, I don't think it'll be much of an issue to get (for example) MikroTik's RouterOS to run on it.
