@novenary@chjara I promise this isn't some weird "anti-globalist" conspiracy, it's just how nations position themselves internationally when they're given carte blanche to determine the world order -in this case called the rule-based international order - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberal_international_order - with a mandate where they can claim they represent international best interests, like the Allies did following WWII.
@novenary@chjara (i always feel anxious i come off as a crank when talking about stuff like this, because so much polisci lingo has been co-opted by conspiracy theorists and those with axes to grind 😭
see also the current railing against "15 minute cities" as some kind of "woke plot" to control and restrict freedom of movement - bro, they just want to be able to walk to the corner shop)
@novenary@chjara taught from a geopolitics point of view, the UN is the latest in a long series of institutions that exist to maintain and protect the national interests of the winners of widespread conflict. Similarly we have the League of Nations and the Peace of Westphalia before.
While UN some un-bodies do great work, it's no coincidence that the only legally binding group, the Security Council has permanent members with veto powers all given to the winners of WWII - US, UK, FRA, RUS, CHN.
As long as programming has been a thing, people have been (too!) quick to copy and paste code.
Half of the motivation behind object oriented development was to try and increase the ability to support code reuse. Spoiler: it mostly didn't change things (certainly, not on its own).
I think you look back with glasses too rose-tinted.
Selected quotes: "In June 2017, Luckey founded the autonomy-focused defense co. Anduril Industries, along with former Palantir Technologies executives"
"In November 2022, it was announced that as a commemoration of the anime Sword Art Online, Luckey created a VR headset that kills its human user in real life when the user dies digitally in the video game, by means of several explosive charges affixed above the screen"
If this sounds too cliche for you, I have great news:
This is the actual bio for Palmer Luckey, the Oculus Rift founder who was acquired and fired by zuckerberg, and now leads defence contractor Arundil, the NixOS conference sponsor everyone is mad about.
Talented, optimistic engineer develops bright new tech, before being exploited by megacorp. In the heat of his betrayal, heel-turns to a mad scientist, instead developing autonomous killer drones and a VR video game system that kills its losers by blowing their heads up with explosives.
@lanodan needing piles of architectural extensions for X11 is, as you know, why people opted to move on to wayland.
I don't grudge people for wanting to stick with what they know rather than join a vanguard of tech progress - not everyone wants their computer to be a project - but at the same time FUD like this is just FUD.
@lanodan jwz is, in general, a bit of a cock. I don't know why people put so much uncritical faith in his stuff.
When it comes to a lot of his writing, he presents himself as unambiguously correct in all cases and always other people's problems.
I worry people with this kind of attitude distort the truth, and sure enough in his long series of "I told you so" posts about other screensavers bugs, he neglects to even mention xscreensavers own, despite promoting it as bulletproof one-true solution
@lanodan this is really just a light DB with multiple network protocol front-ends: DNS/HTTP/other.
It makes so much sense to have the database be mnesia, with a core gen_server handling queries/inserts/deletes and then a gen_server for each front-end, sending messages to the core.
Then I don't have to worry about everything exploding because someone sent a DNS request that killed that front-end, it'd just pop right back up from the supervisor.
Every time I restart work on this program I think about how much more sensible it would be to write in Erlang, but now everyone is using Rust and I have to reinvent OTP but shitty.
laughing at Element (matrix company) CEO, a for-profit org selling to the defence industry, acting wounded that foss network libera is giving up on them because of their shit treatment.
libera has bent over backwards to support matrix while they leaked protected irc information, dropped messages, and spammed channels, and they're acting as if we've left them in the cold.
