@youronlyone Thanks for the in-depth info. Doesn't sound like a lifestyle I'd want, but definitely better than what I've heard about conditions with the big k-pop corporations. :)

@youronlyone Are the work conditions for pop idols in the Philippines at least less dehumanizing than in South Korea? Because that stuff is, like, borderline slave labor. :F

@bluGill @arstechnica @ElSupreme Really? I was pretty sure there's a dedicated type of device to measure specifically how tight bolt/screw connections are, but then again this isn't my area of expertise.

@Lily_and_frog Yeah, it seems pointless at first, but @ElSupreme clarified why it actually makes a lot of sense, see https://mastodon.sdf.org/@ElSupreme/111726678236007529

Didn't expect that, but actually makes a lot of sense in hindsight.

@phryk@mastodon.social They are amazing QA tools. They record the number of bolts driven per assembly per station. They log the exact torque of every bolt. They make sure everything is built as it should be. No loose bolts (737MAX cough cough), no missing bolts. And down the road if issues are found the manufacturer can look at logs and see if the spec for torque needs to be adjusted (i.e. the VINs failing are on the high or low side of the spec). @arstechnica@mastodon.social

Today, a graphics fix made its way into the official #FreeBSD 14 pkg repo.

I'm not entirely sure which package the perpetrator was, but likely one of libdrm, mesa-libs and mesa-dri.

This fixes an issue where elements on screen wouldn't get updated when the mouse was moving.

This made blender unusable for me for *months* and was finally fixed after today's update.

So, if you had similar issues (especially with an amdgpu-driven card) try updating – things just might work after that. :)

This might sound dumb on the surface, but I'm seriously asking:

Why don't mice (the input device) have vibration feedback like game controllers?

Seems like an extremely obvious way to improve a device that mostly stagnated the last 20+ years…

Current developments around stricter migration policies corroborate a thing I have said for years:

We need a leftist critique of Islamism.

Most lefties blanket-labeling all criticism of Islamism as islamophobic is how we got to the current situation.

A situation where the only widely established proposals of dealing with islamists are those from the center- to extreme right.

This is at least part of why those right-wing proposals are what's drawn from for new regulations on migration.

Anyhow, my last push while my sanity kept crumbling was to actually report that ZFS issue and ask for GPT support in GELI that isn't ridiculously impractical.

    Last night was exhausting.

Wanted to migrate my homeserver from #ZFS to UFS and thought it would take maybe 2 hours.

After all, the new drives were already formatted and mounted – so just copy all the data around, adjust loader.conf and write an fstab.

It took me over 12 hours due to various fuckups and me wanting to make some baseline improvements to the boot process.

During the whole ordeal, I kinda-sorta bricked the machine because there's a geli (BSD crypto stuff) option to ask for the passphrase once that not only fails in my use-case, but also blocks USB HIDs (i.e. the keyboard) from being initialized.

And *then* I had to learn the hard way that automatically mounting #ZFS without already loading it from the bootloader is categorically impossible on #FreeBSD.

And it seems like this is a wontfix? Like, wanting to mount ZFS pools/volumes automatically without depending on ZFS before init is invoked is just considered… not valid anymore?

As the UEFI default for USB was to not wait for initialization, that made keyboard input impossible – even to get into the UEFI menu and change the setting.

So I had to take that box apart and disconnect all drives so I could start the machine and have the UEFI be active long enough to do the HID initialization so I could get into the UEFI menu and tell it to always initialize HIDs before bringing up the bootloader.

@evan That is one incredibly naive take and it is deeply worrying to see it from someone in your position.

Capitalism has unabatedly invaded and monetized every facet of life it could for longer than I can remember…

To take an example from just yesterday: Docker.

But also GitHub with its Pilot AI.

The FOSS space is getting progressively more monetized, which is a feedback loop giving more power to those with more money. This is not a good development.

    @waweic Oh yes, so much.

I still haven't quite figured out how to do this on BSD tho. Linux has a function that will just notify you, BSD has something that is similar, but apparently more involved and I'm not yet sure if it can feasibly be used to monitor the whole collection.

Getting this to work portably might be a hassle, but I absolutely consider this a must-have.
