@dalias @NanoRaptor Oops. So you mean you want inexpensive plain local storage? Or is tarsnap considered expensive? I guess at $250/TB/month it can indeed be considered somewhat expensive, yes.. I haven't previously done the math.

How much do you need to store? If it is not hideous amounts I may be able to help..

@dalias Not everyone can run on zfs, I suppose.</sarcasm>

There are many fancy features in both windows (restore points) and macos (apfs snapshots) that could be used to make recovery easier, but they're wrapped in so much "feature" fluff and shitty UIs (if any) that they aren't actually very useful.

Also we need file systems that act like RAM and clearly separate between code and data. Some have the `noexec` flag (zfs), but I'm sure there would be better ways. Also yes scripts can still be interpreted, but the interpreter is under OS control so..

Delta needs to become more portable. The current distribution form does not help its proliferation to less-than-mainstream platforms, which I feel undermines its purpose ever so slightly.. Then again, I might just be that weirdo guy :)

    @feld @delta @collectifission I mean server-side. Clients don't seem to be a problem at all. :)

@feld @delta @collectifission Uhm, I only find references to Debian (12) - I've been looking for a while for people running the server components on FreeBSD (without linuxulator or VMs) and haven't found any?

I wanted to invest some time in unpacking the whole pyinfra stuff with a "how hard could it be" approach, but somehow I haven't gotten around to it yet :D

@feld @delta @collectifission Huh, wonder why I could not find that on my own - but thanks a lot! I'll be checking this out. Too bad the chef client is not in ports, but rubygem-chef should do, right?

@dalias Not on iOS, apparently? Whatever I do it tries to look up "chrome" as a host name, rewriting it to remove the : . Even manually correcting it doesn't work :(

@amszmidt Yeah I read you loud and clear - I'm being a bit difficult on purpose.

Let's say it is decided that your QIC-tape is too obscure or otherwise difficult to access to fulfil the requirement (although I do actually have several drives ;). At which point does a site like GitHub stop being acceptable? How many and which countries, browsers, user agents, IP ranges, etc do they have to block? How many captchas and trackers do they have to implement before it becomes too discriminating?

The answer is probably that the line is drawn closer to your tapes than to anything GitHub is likely to do in the foreseeable future. The word "likely" may end up doing some heavy lifting there, though.

I know this is not currently a "big enough" problem to warrant my harping on this - but recent events has caused me great pause in how I deal with centralised, corporately-run services that want or need to comply with the whims of an unpredictable government. Especially when I depend on them for anything but entertainment..

@agreeable_landfall @mms At you site about that last part? Specifically, it may be GitHub that prevents you from accessing it, not your boss or government. If we know GitHub discriminates, can it be considered a compliant means of distributing ("providing") source code? I honestly don't know.

What I mean to say is, GitHub and its corporate likes must eventually die, and @forgejo and similar free, open and federated repository services must become the norm.

Just found this sealed #floppy disk in my copy of "ZEN of Code Optimization" from ... 1994! And it even covers Pentium programming!
A whopping 300 kilobytes of #assembly, #C and #C++ code. How much of this would still be useful today? Should I (re-)read the book?

Will be uploading to archive.org..I'll post the link once it's up there.

@muzej Are you sure you know what you're asking? It's 2024, and you're asking a late-40s guy what his desktop looked like in the 90's? Well, here you go.. CW for a reason. :D

Just upgraded my @peertube instance to 5.0.0. As always, instructions are perfectly usable even on a less-common platform like #FreeBSD.
