@dalias I'm not sure what you expect me to do?

I'm trying to explain to you that the wider world doesn't want to be force fed the dream of geeks, because most of them have other things in life beside maintaining their own infra, but instead you take it as a way to tell me to get out of here?

@dalias only a very small number of people care to access every one of their machines anywhere in the world.

I keep repeating this for over sevne years: it's a geeks' wet dream – something _we_ as a category keep wanting, but don't realize most of the rest of the world *doesn't care* they're not able to.

@dalias as I said, @tailscale covers that niche for me at this point, I don't need IPv6 to solve it.

@dalias I have too many things I enjoy in life more than maintaining my own network infrastructure for what ends up being at this point ideological purity points 🤷

@dalias I'm this {} close to just turn off IPv6 on my local network — mostly because I have no idea if my next ISP will have it, and Tailscale filled in the needs I had for IPv6.

End of the year appears to have woken up networking folks trying to convince us that 2025 is definitely the year of
    #IPv6!

If you believe so, help me collect services that are totally definitely available over IPv6, to show that v4 is legacy, and users can totally give it up!

@GossiTheDog wow. I mean that's taunting to be caught.

I shouldn't comment since I have friends over at Snowflake and I can't imagine they're having a good time.

But if I had to give a mild take I would say that they've probably been at it much longer before getting so cocky.

@mgorny use REUSE.software and SPDX headers and everything becomes larger than the GPL notice.

Though, I went the other direction over time and I'm more likely to use MIT/0BSD than GPL simply because nothing I write make a difference to be copyleft-licensed, but it can make a difference to be permissive-licensed.

@pfefferle @will my main difficulty with WordPress plugins is to know which ones to trust … seeing this one is created and maintained by people I trust directly or one step away is _a lot_ better than having to guess :)

Me: damn it, WordPress doesn't provide OpenGraph metadata. I wonder if there's a trustworthy plugin for it?

One search later, thank you @will 🤗

@lanodan @dalias (français n'est pas un probleme — though I'm very rusty in writing it)

That sounds about right, though? You can have _some_ problems not having v6, but you don't have access to the Internet without v4.

Dual-stack is the minimum bar to be a modern service (glaring at GitHub as always) but it's way too early to disable v4. (Nit: if you're developing software/firmware/products that are supposed to last more than a year you should test them on v6-only networks!)

@lanodan @dalias there's no realistic network that is "IPv4-less" — at least not in terms of egress.

They may be NAT64 or have a proxy (if it's a backend network with limited egress), but if you don't have v4 egress of some kind you have an unusable network (https://flameeyes.blog/2023/04/30/ipv6-in-real-life/).

Otherwise — yeah it's silly that they put these warnings for Docker in 2023 (given that, btw, getting this to work "right" even without ip6tables is relatively straightforward¹), but it's important still a thing.

@lanodan @dalias still not costing enough to cover the risks associated though, for enough small-to-medium businesses.

Which is why I refuse to call v4 "legacy." v4 is the present — we need to care about the future, but that's what "v6 only" still is: the future (for many, even dual-stack is still the future!)
