Many are either oversimplifying this as a funding issue or making blatant assumptions on that guy's character, while missing the main point: #instances have been sold (as in the case) or shut down (switter.at) on liability grounds. The #fediverse does not operate in a vacuum, and everyone must abide by all sorts of #law. @privacat has an excellent guide on GDPR for #mastoadmin, and I'm sure there are many other #legal aspects (esp. with handling speech) to consider.
Suji Yan has acquired #Pawoo, making him the largest owner of #Mastodon (and fediverse) instances. I suspect Pawoo changed hands for reasons similar to mstdn.jp and mastodon.cloud: to avoid #legal liabilities for not moderating enough (remember Pawoo's domain was briefly suspended in September? Also, the latter two were sold amid legislative efforts to combat #cyberbullying in #Japan ). This, be it recentralization or #moderation, should concern all #fediverse (especially #Japanese) users.
@hypolite@nuron Nitter (along with other similar frontends) believes (of course not tried in court) that their use is legal under various provisions for proxies as well as ToS's. See also https://github.com/zedeus/nitter/issues/482 and https://github.com/zedeus/nitter/wiki/DMCA-templates . That does not prevent people from sending DMCA takedowns regardless, and Hetzner will kick you off if there are too many DMCA takedowns (as long as they look valid?) against you (even if your use is legal).
